We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittney Powell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Brittney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

I have always had the drive to hustle. I always had a lifestyle in my mind as a young girl. I remember being 9 years old inventing dishes to cook and making new inventive place settings. So, i always had this creative mind to want to create something. I opened this small restaurant and that didn’t work out so i prayed and asked God what to do next and i dreamed of clothes and that’s how Kay Couture came about.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I have been an entrepreneur for 17 years. I have a clothing line, cosmetics line, skincare line, scent infused shea butter and a weightloss pill i invented. I am now a talent recruiter for a few casting agencies and a talent manager.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

I had to unlearn that i couldn’t learn. In this business you can never think you know and have it all and no one can tell you anything. once i opened up to be able to still have my core values but tweak it alittle to gain more attention and stable customers the world opened up to me.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

I saved my income tax refund check two years in a row and invested in myself. i let it sit and mature and thats how i had the capital i needed to get started.
