We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Annalee Parker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Annalee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
My craft has been learned through a blend of academic exploration, hands-on practice, real-world applications, and an inherent passion for art and design.
In learning watercolor, I’ve gone beyond classroom lessons. I’ve hit the outdoors, painting landscapes in plein air sessions and joining paint-out events. These experiences allowed me to capture nature’s changing beauty and learn from fellow artists, getting different perspectives.
For me, learning isn’t just about success; it’s about embracing failures and experimenting. The mix of formal learning, outdoor sessions, and diverse subject exploration has shaped my journey in watercolor, giving me the freedom to express and learn in a way that suits me best.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Greetings! I am an artist whose creative journey began during my teenage years, finding solace and inspiration in art while immersed in my room, accompanied by music. The foundation for my artistic endeavors was laid in elementary school, where a diverse array of art classes, from metal jewelry making to woodworking, sparked my passion for creativity.
Hailing from a coastal town in Northern California, surrounded by the awe-inspiring beauty of the Pacific Ocean, nature became a profound muse. Exploring the beach, collecting seashells, and admiring the serenity of the ocean instilled in me an enduring love for the natural world.
Post high school, I pursued art classes at a local community college, where I discovered a deep affinity for watercolor painting. The medium’s expressive nature, as colors flowed and emotions were evoked, captivated my artistic senses. Since then, watercolor has remained my primary creative outlet.
In essence, my artistic journey is one shaped by early explorations in art, the tranquil beauty of nature, and a profound appreciation for the emotive qualities of watercolor. These experiences have not only shaped my craft but have also instilled in me an enduring passion for creating art that resonates with emotions and beauty.
I have a diverse portfolio in painting and drawing—whether it’s illustrating pets, crafting portraits, designing tattoos, or creating logos. However, my true passion rests in depicting nature, a subject that continuously draws me back, regardless of the medium I’m using. There’s an inexplicable pull towards capturing the beauty of the natural world that resonates deeply within me, igniting my creative fervor and driving my artistic pursuits.
I specialize in bringing my clients’ visions to life through my art. I aim to encapsulate the essence of their desires into captivating visual representations. What sets me apart is my unwavering dedication to infuse every piece with a touch of nature’s beauty. My passion for painting nature not only adds a unique flair to my work but also resonates deeply with those seeking artwork that breathes life and tranquility into their spaces.
I take immense pride in the versatility of my art—whether it’s the diverse range of subjects I’ve illustrated or the various mediums I’ve tried. However, what I hold closest to my heart is my ability to capture the enchanting beauty of nature. It’s a constant theme woven throughout my work that truly reflects my passion and dedication.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist lies in the ability to translate emotions, thoughts, and experiences into tangible creations that resonate with others. There’s an incredible joy in witnessing how my art connects with people on an emotional level, evoking feelings, memories, or even sparking inspiration within them. To know that something I’ve created has the power to evoke emotions or bring a moment of joy to someone else’s life is immensely fulfilling.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My journey has been a testament to resilience and determination amidst life’s twists and turns. I embarked on my college path straight out of high school, eagerly pursuing art classes at a community college and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. However, life had different plans when my husband made the noble decision to enlist in the army.
In support of his commitment, we uprooted our lives and relocated 2,000 miles away, putting my aspirations on hold. As time passed, our family expanded, welcoming two wonderful children. Becoming a stay-at-home mom became my priority, temporarily setting aside my dream of becoming an illustrator.
It wasn’t until 2019 that the opportunity to rekindle my passion for art arose. With unwavering determination, I seized the chance and re-enrolled in college as a full-time adult student. Despite the challenges of juggling family responsibilities and pursuing an education, I dove back into my artistic journey.
Currently, I’m pursuing a B.F.A. in Graphic Design at Austin Peay State University, determined to turn my passion into a purposeful career. My journey highlights resilience—an unwavering commitment to my dreams despite pauses and detours along the way. It’s a story of perseverance, adapting to life’s changes, and returning to my passion with renewed determination to carve my path in the world of art and design.
