We were lucky to catch up with Yolandra Powell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yolandra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I have been in the Childcare Industry for 30 years , I absolutely love what I do, it is my passion. It started from a part time job at a daycare center when I graduated from high school, I was going to college in the fall but was uncertain of my major. It was then that I realized my gift in childcare. I was 18 years old, and now I am 48 years old, a successful Childcare Business owner, author, speaker, Childcare Coach, advocate and guru in the Childcare Industry.
Yolandra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I think what sets Yolandra Powell apart from others, is that I know my purpose and I stay in my own unique lane. I am authentic in this industry. I share my struggle story as well as my success story. I love to help others birth their vision and cultivate their gifts to become successful Childcare Leaders. I am naturally a motivator and encourager to anyone I meet. I have no competition, I like to see others win and become successful. Childcare is my occupassion not just my occupation !
Have you ever had to pivot?
The time I had to pivot my Childcare Business, undoubtedly was during COVID-19. This forever changed the way I operated my business. I had to learn to adapt to the current now and do what I had to do to keep my Childcare Businesses afloat. There were several childcare businesses that were closing their doors, but I had invested to much to go down like the Titanic. We survived and thrived even the more and I am glad I kept my doors open and ready to serve the community with quality Childcare services.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My co-owner is my sister. I am the oldest, she majored in Childcare as well. We have been co- owners and business partners for over 10 years. People say don’t do business with your family, my sister and I are a perfect example that you can do business with family, set boundaries and be successful! We operate an thriving childcare business with a year long wait list.
