Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dan Wang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Dan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
1. My parents gave me enough freedom to learn art when I was young, and made me have the desire to be an artist when I was still a child 2. My parents strongly opposed my continuing to study art when I was a teenager, and they wanted me to have a stable job when I grew up, which gave me an incredible enthusiasm to continue to study art as a rebel at that age. 3. Fortunately, my parents chose to support me to live the life I like after I became an adult, so they gave me great emotional support when I encountered difficulties on the road of continuing to pursue art.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m I am a costume designer originally from China, I have dreamed of becoming a costume designer since high school, so I majored in costume design in undergrad school. There, I began to systematically study drama and film, and began to get in touch with some related work, such as some short films made by students, and worked as an assistant to some famous designers. After college, I worked in theater, film and fashion design, and slowly began to focus on film and theater. In the fifth year after my undergraduate graduation, I was more sure that I liked the job I was engaged in, so I chose to further my study in New York, and spent three happy years in NYU. During these three years, I have a deeper understanding of costume design. After I graduate in 2021, I continue to work in costume design between China and the U.S. As a costume designer, I provide costume design services for films, dramas and advertisements, including but not limited to participating in the creation of scripts related to design, cooperating with other main creators to design, and communicating with actors to design the costumes, hairstyles and makeup that best suit the character and temperament of the actors.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think it’s the desire to tell a story. I’ve always felt that everyone sees the world differently at every stage of their life. A large part of the pleasure of being alive is to experience more, but our time is limited, and our moods change with the conditions all the time. I enjoy sharing my own vision of the world with others, and I am eager to preserve every stage of my life through creation. By telling stories through costume design, I can have a way to record and share life
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
This I feel is more abstract, I can call it freedom I don’t like to divide life into reality and dreams. I think life is a whole, and the most valuable way to experience life is to follow my own feelings. As a creator, you are free to feel life, to release life, and in a sense, you are freer to conform to the pace of your own life rather than the pace that society has given you. That’s the most beautiful part for me
