We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elizabeth Sabine. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elizabeth below.
Elizabeth, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes, I am a full time artist, I work 7 days a week with allowing my mornings & afternoons designated to creative painting time because that is when my mind is at its best. One day of the week is usually a framing day. ~ (I fabricate all my wood frames.) I will designate afternoon and evenings for home/ client appointments and weekends will usually be for appointments, deliveries and installs. I always will work around my clients/gallerys schedule to Accommodate them and what works best . Definitely not like this from day 1- about 11 years ago
One of my friends convinced me to start painting again to help with my stress. – I was a busy mom working at home picking up some interior design work as well as a floral designer doing events and weddings- this line of work was taking me away from my family and pretty stressful. I have always painting and sketched but started to dedicate and carve out time to work in this creative field that I always loved.
I came across one summer this creative home store in Beach Haven LBI called Artifacts. I walked in and spoke with the owner and asked if I can give her some work on consignment. She agreed and started selling my work at this little shop, I then started to sell in other stores in the Ocean county and Monmouth area. These stores would host art receptions and shows. and from there started applying to Juried art shows/festivals throughout the east coast.
Knowing what I do now I would have started these festival shows earlier & finding more local stores/galleries to show my work. It allows for so much more exposure & getting your work out there to be seen.
Here is my official bio:
Elizabeth Sabine is an Ocean County, New Jersey based freelance artist whose work is distinguished by its eloquent simplicity. Elizabeth formally studied art & design at the Fashion Institute of Technology NYC & has been active in this space ever since. Largely influenced by the impressionist movement, Elizabeth is able to bring to life the light & atmosphere that a moment in time possesses. She finds inspiration in the color of nature that is intensified through her work. Although she primarily works with oils, she does not limit herself to this. Elizabeth utilizes many mediums including acrylic, watercolor & mixed medium art. Elizabeth’s work is emotional & personal. She believes that art goes beyond aesthetics of an image & is really rooted in the feelings a piece of art invokes & the life it creates.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always been a creative mind and have expressed that through many avenues including design, visual merchandising, floral design, but my true passion has always been painting.. I have spent hours upon hours working on my technique trying new things and working towards new collections. I am proud to be a full time artist- I am truly living my dream. I am always working to towards being a better artists and creating new things. I primarily work with oils on canvas utilizing pallet knives and wide brush strokes to create ethereal layered dimension throughout my work.
I want my clients and supporters to find joy & peace in my work, To feel excited to add my art to their collection/ home design.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Earlier in my career – I had an art show with another artist and didn’t sell a single artwork at the show while I witness her work selling. It was truly heartbreaking to not have clients interested in my work enough to buy it. The time and effort put in was exhausting especially not to see a good turnout.
However, I have always told myself that art is something that has to resonate with the buyer and sometimes clients need to go home and sleep on it. think about it…and that was just not my show. I got back in my studio worked a little harder and booked another show. I would love to say that I never zero’d out again at a show but that would not be true. But shows are important, they exposed my work, meeting tons of new potential clients, also reconnecting with collectors, handing out a ton of business cards. I always seem to get a call back which makes it all worth it. I also like to have different sizes with multiple price points. Someone may not have the room for an oversized work but would love to have a mini for there work desk or layer in a built in.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, Im always setting new goals. Currently I am starting a new line of abstract work.
