Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dwayne Perryman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dwayne, thanks for joining us today. One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
Bringing awareness to all of the benefits and opportunities that come with home ownership is very important to me. There is a popular quote by Will Rogers that says “Don’t wait to buy real estate. Buy real estate and wait.” Most people, who don’t come from a background of ownership, fail to realize the message in that quote. Sure owning a home is a big commitment and can be intimidating, but compared to leasing, in most cases, it is the far superior choice. My goal is to open the eyes of those who have been in a cycle or leasing for generations, and let them know that they too can own a home, or a plot of land that can be passed down from generation to generation.

Dwayne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began my real estate journey as a buyer, not knowing anything about Realtors, much less the necessity of working with one. I was drawn into this profession by my background as a Business Admin Major with an emphasis in Marketing, as well as the relationship that my wife and I built with our then Realtor. I enjoyed the entire home buying process, from our first-time home buyer’s class to the very first time we walked through our home as the owners! I deeply involved myself with the process learning how to shop for a home, analyzing the data, viewing the homes, and negotiating the deal. It all excited me and helped lead me to the point of where I am now, helping others experience the perks of owning a home. I enjoy all of the updates from my clients telling me about the first holiday dinners in the homes, sending pictures of the new garden out back, and all of the other milestones that they take pride it. It feels good to be trusted and to just being a part of their process.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My business model is take care of your clients and they will take care of you! I treat all of my transactions as if I am the buyer or as if it is my home for sale. I don’t take any shortcuts and I do my very best in preparing my clients for any and all scenarios. I am also big on educating my clients I like to provide an outline of the process in writing before we ever start the process, then I talk them through that same information as we go through. The confidence of knowing what to expect, good or bad, is one of the number one ingredients to crafting a good game plan. With that being said, I can proudly say that the majority of my business comes from repeat clients or referrals from past clients.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes, I will give the unpopular answer. There was a time in my career when I was hit with an unexpected detour. I have been in the real estate business since 2018, but also in the healthcare IT field up until 2020. During the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was laid off like so many other Americans. I had never been fired nor laid off so really didn’t know how to take it. I was flooded with emotions, excited to now be a full time Realtor, but anxious about the uncertainty; motivated to grow my real estate business, but disappointed in being laid off. There was a sense of rejection, but also freedom. Had it not been for my relationship with God I could have taken the wrong turn and panicked myself into a career that I had no desire to be in. I focused on Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” and removed the fears of the unknown, knowing that God would supply my needs. The continual “seeking” has kept me studying my Bible and strengthening my relationship with God.
