We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephanie Burleson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
To be honest, asking friends and family to support my businesses and events use to be a point of stress for me. It can be crushing to have people compliment you all your life stating how talented you are, then when its time to buy into that talent or show up for you, they fall short. The blow is even more disappointing when you have gone out your way to show up for them. However, I had to realize something as a creative and entrepreneur. The “vision” was given to me, not everyone else. I cannot expect for others to share my same level of passion when it is not their purpose to. Realizing this has allowed me to refocus my energy, stay positive and push forward.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been a artist for as long as I could remember. Fashion is one of the many ways that I choose to express my artist side. My grandmother was a talented seamstress and I remember watching her sew my school clothes and special occasion dresses. Her hands were truly blessed and before she left this earth, I was able to learn from her expertise. From those precious moments we had together, So Like You was birth to keep her legacy alive. So Like You is a clothing brand that caters to each individual’s personality. I design and sew my own pieces while working with my clients to ensure they are happy with the final product. I started out only making skirts in 2016 but since then, I have branched out to children’s clothing, women’s separates and semi formal wear.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I would have to say traveling to other states has brought additional clients my way. Its so easy to stay in a box, especially when that’s what you know. However, getting out and going to other states to network, has truly been a blessing. I have gained new friends and new clients.

If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
So Like You definitely has been branching out within the past several years. We have produced The Real Top Models of DFW, The Real Top Models of Raleigh and our upcoming event, Respect My Art Showcase & Tribute that will be held on June 9, 2024 in Carrollton, TX.
