We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carla Calderas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carla , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Yes! It is so important to have time off to recharge and be able to provide my best to my clients. A company policy at Calderas Counseling is that all staff can take up to 1 week off every quarter of the year. I believe that when we take time to rest and relax, our imaginations are free to explore ideas, dreams, and goals. As a business owner it is very important to have discipline, systems in place, and a good support system with staff that you can trust. As a business owner in the mental health field, taking vacations is necessary so that productivity and profitability continue to grow. If you want your business to perform better, take time off to recharge, refocus, and realign.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sure, Hi! I am Carla Calderas and I am a mental health therapist. I am on a life journey of healing myself and helping others heal. I have experienced trauma and difficult situations throughout my life so I want to help others believe that healing is possible. My goal is to help others find their power within and I do this by providing mental health therapy, offering weekend retreats, and I am also writing a book about this topic. You are not alone, and your circumstances and past are part of you but do not define you.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes! These are 3 of the books that have impacted me the most: -How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie
-The Art of Living by Bob Proctor and Sandra Gallagher
-You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think honesty and authenticity. I think it is necessary to be honest about my own journey, what got me to where I am, and honesty when working with clients to identify if I am the best fit for them or if someone else can help them or be a better fit for them. I want to help and that sometimes means directing to others or providing different resources.
Authenticity plays a huge role in my life and the work I do with clients. I do what I talk about and have consistent routines and systems that work for me. I practice the skills that I talk to my clients about; from meditation to affirmations to boundary setting.
When clients come to me they know that I care and I want us all to heal.
