We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cicsley Galloway a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cicsley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
In the beginning of my styling career, my initial clients spun out from word-of-mouth suggested by friends & family, and I was totally OK with that happening. Those early on recommendations helped me build confidence and gather resources for future clients. I actually initiated my first non-friend/family/friend-of-a-friend clients due to my confidence being boosted early on. It was time for me to seize my moment by leveling up on my approach as well as my clientele and I did just that! In the late spring, I attended a Women’s Networking event where there would be a local PR/influencer in attendance. I introduced myself to her and we exchanged contact information. I sent a follow-up email and during our correspondence, I offered to style her for Greenville Euphoria 2023. After our consultation, I sent over a few looks and she was “blown away”! Those were her words!! I curated 4 looks for her. Three were worn during Euphoria and one would be worn later. Afterwards, we were both excited as she reported on her compliments and how great she felt throughout the weekend wearing my looks.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a style enthusiastic and confidence builder by nature. Curating looks have always come natural to me. I’ve always loved to play are with patterns, textures, and colors. Using myself as my first model, to my dolls, then to live models was so exciting. I am my own walking billboard! I felt the need to nurture my craft by working in fashion/apparel retail for over 18 years. Throughout this time, I would curate looks for customers on my jobs, family, and friends. My skills eventually lead to me hosting my very own fashion shows where I was the sole stylist. My natural passion for styling, the experience that I attained over the years, my desire to help others embrace their inner icon, and the big styling service needs that I saw in the upper state of South Carolina was due to the uptick of events happening around as well as style trends emerging was definitely the driving force to me birthing Scorpian Luv Brand in 2014.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source for new clients for me right now are having repeat clients that have a network of people that are looking for my types of services regularly. I also keep up on the current events and try to attend as many of them in this area and my neighboring states.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was being scared to charge clients my actual prices for my services. I very often would lower my prices out of fear of scaring clients off, not realizing that cheap prices can scare people off as well. It used to give me such anxiety to give my final fees even though I knew I was worth my price. I didn’t want the “she’s cheap” to start being a negative conversation thread or expectation amongst clients.I now stand firm on my prices because my work speaks for itself AND me!
