We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Glenn Franklin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Glenn below.
Glenn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I took drama in Everman High School and performed in many plays and musicals, Then followed it up at Texas Wesleyan University and did the same. Then started acting professionally and did even more auditioning and acting all over the country. But it wasn’t until 7 years ago that I started making films and starring in them. But I had a problem. How do I move up in this industry and get taken seriously? Well like most people out there I said that I wanted to “Pursue” an acting career. For years I bought into that which means in a metaphorical sense that I was chasing an acting career. Years later in my acting coach Glenn Morshower’s class I found out I was wrong. We do not and should not ever “Pursue” an acting career. We should “Have it”! Meaning if I was to call you up and ask you if you would like to go “pursue”dinner? You would look at me like I was crazy because no one pursue’s dinner, they have it! Which means that even you are able to have an acting career and now. It is all about the mindset. In one you are lacking and are chasing and in the other you are superior and having!
Most people don’t realize that the process of having a career is often slowed down by, drumroll please…ourselves. Let that sink in. We are most often the thing that stands in the way of our dreams. Because we either are lazy, have a negative view of ourselves and our acting skills, and or believe that we couldn’t possibly be worthy of a career. Which means that we have low self esteem and are coming from the room of No. There are four rooms of possibility. The first room is impossibility which means whatever the question is the answer is “No”! Ex. Can I be an actor? No. Can I be a movie star? No!
The second room is possibility. Meaning is it possible to have an acting career? Maybe. Which the code word is maybe. Ex. Can I be an actor? Maybe
The third room is probability. Which it’s code word is Yes. Ex. Can you have a career? Yes you can but will you?
The fourth room is inevitability’ which the code word is definitely,Yes. That it is where there is no doubt in your mind that you will do this. Ex. Will I have an acting career? There is no way that I could not have an acting career because it is inevitable for me to do so! So your answers or excuses as to why you don’t have a career depends on what room you choose to live in.
My essential skill that I believe that each actor or person for that matter should learn is to be nice to yourself. Just like anything in life mistakes will be made. Mistakes suck but the honest truth is that we grow from our mistakes. Mistakes teach us what not to do. Most tend to freak out or get mad when they do something wrong and blame themselves for their doing bad. Some slip into depression over it. The best thing to do is realize that we all make mistakes and that will happen from time to time. The other best thing to do is take a second and acknowledge the mistake and say to yourself “That’s old. I’m New. Goodbye.” And then forget it. Be nice to yourself by allowing yourself not to fester over it. It is done. There is nothing in this world that you can do to fix it so just learn the lesson and move on to the next moment. I know it can hurt. But if you let it roll off your back it is much easier to tackle life’s next journey.
I believe the worst obstacle that most people face is themselves. By not playing for your own team. We second guess ourselves out of a job. We have internal strife about making a mistake. We don’t prepare our instrument by drinking water, exercise, eating right, getting enough sleep. We drink to excess. There was an English rowing team that wanted to win Gold so bad in the Olympics that ten months prior to the games they decided to get serious about their teams activities and mindset. They adapted a saying for each of the teammates to ask themselves. “Does it make the boat go faster?” If the answer was no they did not do it! 10 months later they won the gold. Now ask yourself this question? Are there things that you are doing that is making your boat go slower? Then quit doing them immediately. Play for your own team and strive to be the thing that becomes the thing that you want to be.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Hi my name is Glenn Franklin. I am 45 , married to my beautiful wife Karyn, and we have a daughter named Lexi and our son named Logan. I began acting at the age of 14 at Everman High School. And I was hooked. I starred in many plays and musicals there. When I graduated I went to Texas Wesleyan University and did more of the same. Then in 1998 I went professional and started getting paid for doing musicals on the road in shows and tours. It wasn’t until about 7 years ago that I started gravitating towards film and I am in love with it.
I act, sing, and dance in that order. I also write, direct, produce my own scripts, and have worked on or starred in over 85 movies in just seven short years. I keep getting better and better in each one. I think that the one thing that sets me apart is a winning mindset, as well as a funny sense of humor. The sense of humor sets you apart in this industry because If you are fun to be around a lot of times they will cast you because of that.
I am most proud of the growth of my career and my mindset change that I had to go through to show that I was the right choice for the job. From starting as an extra to moving up to lead it has been an incredible journey that I would not trade for anything. This all happened by honing my craft in my acting coach Glenn Morshower’s class. Because it is my belief that to become anything in life you must practice your craft. The other thing that facilitated great outcomes of being cast it was being dependable and on time and working well with others. I want people to know that when I am seen in a movie that I take it seriously and am making a conscious effort to feel all the things in the script that make it real to me. I love doing my job!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe that their should be more national and state funds available to help people who are artistic complete their projects and don’t have so much red tape around the funds. Also make the process easier by having step by step instructions in video and in print of how to succeed in your given craft. A lot of things in life are covered in red tape so let’s open it up and show people how to get there. Imagine the different forms we could create from this change!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative goal is what I call my pizza. I know that sounds strange but there is a game we play in our acting class called What you claim on your Pizza? And then we respond with I claim Series Regular on my pizza. And then the class repeats it. Series Regular Pizza, Series Regular Pizza Series Regular Pizza.
So yes I claim being a Series Regular on a TV series!
