We recently connected with Salina Romo and have shared our conversation below.
Salina, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
The name of my company is called Flavorgasm. People always tell me that my food has so much flavor so I say it’s called a “flavor orgasm” in your mouth. Have you ever been to a restaurant and left with the taste of your food lingering in your mouth? I went to a breakfast spot in Boston 2 months ago and I can still taste those breakfast potatoes. That is what I want for my business, for people to come and never forget their food experience. Flavorgasm also has a lot to do with my personality, I like to be silly and have fun and make the work environment fun so when I thought of the name and I told my closest friends they all laughed and said “that is so you”. My customers will even say “I’m having a flavorgasm” when they eat my food. If you’ve never had a flavorgasm in your mouth you are definitely missing out!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Salina and food is my passion. I was never a cook, I knew how to make maybe 3 things like enchiladas with canned sauce, my “grandmas tacos” and chorizo and eggs. When I gave birth to my daughter my husband offered the opportunity to stay home with her, so in that time I started following all these food groups on Facebook and getting recipes to cook for my husband and my family. Once I started I just got lost in the recipes and slowly started adding my own twist to things and eventually making my own recipes. Pinterest is my best friend because I hate cooking the same things, I can cook Mexican, Lebanese, Italian, soul food, Chinese food. You name it, I will make it. For my business I am doing a Mexican/lebanese fusion restaurant to blend both of my cultures together. I am still new in the industry and although I am not in an actual restaurant yet, I do still do catering events. My short term goal is a food truck and my long term goal is a restaurant, not a big restaurant just something cute and small because I feel like when food businesses get too big they lose their authenticity and I want to consistently offer the best flavored food you have ever eaten. I do also try to give back to the community as much as I can, I offer my services to different organizations free of charge when they are feeding the homeless or going into treatment facilities cooking for men, women and children fighting addiction. I myself also feed any leftovers from events to the homeless or anytime I sell enough for the day I go outside and feed a homeless person a home cooked meal. I know exactly what it feels like to be in their position so now that I am in a different position I give back as much as I can. When you purchase from me you are purchasing from a mother, wife, recovering addict and a survivor. I thrive every single day to be a better person and to build my business from the ground up.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
First and foremost I got sober 10 years ago, If that doesn’t show resilience I don’t know what does. I see building my business in the same way I see recovery, I can’t stop and I won’t ever stop until I am exactly where I want to be. I got a late start in my life due to my personal choices but that by no means has stopped me in anyway. The way I see it is if I stop now I lose. I like to go back to the story of the guy that was digging for gold for days and gave up when he was only feet away from the gold then you have the guy on the other side digging for the same amount of time but didn’t give up, he just kept going no matter how hard it got and HE GOT THE GOLD. I just know in my heart I will get through any obstacle in my way.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I don’t have a very large audience on social media, I am definitely still growing it but the followers I do have are major supporters of my business and who I am growing into as a person. I post my food as consistently as I can and I try to make most of my recipes relatable to other mothers that have busy chaotic lives. I just have to say be who you are no matter what and consistency is key.
