We recently connected with Shelita Bee and have shared our conversation below.

Shelita , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?

I first knew that I wanted to become a singer- songwriter and an entrepreneur when I was in elementary school. I was about 8 years old. My mother would order tons of CDs from a company called Colombia House. She would put on music and walk around the house singing at the top of her lungs as she would do housework or she would just sit in the family room and jam. She always encouraged me to sing along with her. So, she and I would sing around the house together. I would take some of my favorite CDS from her collection to my room and put them into my stereo and stand in front of the stereo with headphones on and sing while pretending that I was in a recording studio. When I got into middle school, I would write songs for a Hip Hop R&B group that my friends and I started. I’d bring a composition notebook full of songs and parts for each member of the group and we’d stand around together at recess and practice singing and rapping our songs as if we had an upcoming performance. That was when I knew that singing and songwriting was something that I wanted to do.

I knew I wanted to become a creative entrepreneur when I was in middle school. One Christmas, my Godmother brought me an arts and crafts kit. I’d sit in my room and create all kinds of crafts and then sell them to the kids in my neighborhood. I treated my bedroom window as a pretend storefront. The neighborhood kids would come up to my window to see what I had for sale. I realized that I could have fun creating unique things and share them with those liked them enough to pay for them.

Shelita , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My name is Shelita Bee and I am a Gospel singer-songwriter and entrepreneur. I always wanted to become a singer since I was young. Once I gave my life to Jesus Christ, I decided that I would use the gifts that God gave me for Him. I began to write songs that were dedicated to testifying, praising and worshiping the Lord. I began my singing career when I released my first song on June 2022. I came across a beat that I fell in love with and so I teamed up with my husband Ryan Bars, who is a gospel rapper, and together we created the song “Greatest Love”. We have since been booked to perform our song at different churches and events. It is now streaming on all platforms. I believe what sets my Gospel music apart from the others is my style of writing, singing, and the beats that I choose. I like to make music that is relatable, uplifts, encourages, and praises God over smooth melodic beats that people can vibe to. I am currently working on my album that will include the “Greatest Love” single. My album is projected to be released this year in 2024.

I am also the owner of a candle and wax melt company named “HisDaughter Candle Collection”. In 2020, I was working at a job that wasn’t a good fit for me. So one day when I could no longer force myself to work there, I decided to put in my two week notice. One morning God woke me up in the middle of the night and told me that I needed to restart my candle business. (In the past, I’d made candles for fun and sold them to family and friends but I lost interest and stopped.) When I heard him tell me this, I wasn’t sure if it was him that I was hearing of it was my own voice, so I didn’t immediately begin the business. One day when I was on a prayer call with my best friend, God had spoken to her to speak to me prophetically. He told her to tell me that I needed to start my candle business back up. That was my confirmation that it indeed was God’s voice that I heard the other morning. telling me to restart my business. Although I didn’t want to do it, because in the past I’d lost interest in it, I decided to obey God and start it.

He began to give me ideas and different scents to include in my line. He also gave me the name “HisDaughter Candle Collection”. The name is HisDaughter refers to who I and other women of God are to God. He is our father and we are His daughters. There is no space in between the word His and Daughter because it symbolizes how close God’s daughters should be to Him. I believe that having a close, personal relationship with God is very important. What makes my candles and wax melts set apart from the others is that, the names of the fragrances are centered around encouraging and uplifting God’s daughters and may even include a Bible scripture. God has also instructed me to pray over each product that I make. He told me to pray over my products and He would bless the homes that my products enter. I had many testimonies from customers of how the candles/wax melts have blessed them, encouraged them and even uplifted their mood once they began to use them in their homes. Thats when I realized that HisDaughter Candle Collection isn’t just a business, its also ministry. By instructing me to start this business, God revived my love for creating unique products and sharing them with others. I’m a small business and right now, I’m the only employee. Hopefully I will be able to expand in the future. I enjoy making the scents, wax melts, creating the packaging, the names the labels. I love it all. I put love into each and everything that I create within my business and my customers have testified that they can tell. What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?

One particular mission that drives me on my creative journey as a Gospel Singer-Songwriter & Entrepreneur is to spread the good news and love of Jesus Christ.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being a Gospel Singer-songwriter & entreprenuer is that I get to share my creativity and gifts that God has blessed me with, with others. It is very rewarding to hear testimonies from people that have been blessed by music and my products and the positive impact that it has had on their lives.
