We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Garrett Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Garrett below.
Garrett, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I have been a music producer and touring DJ for 10 years. I have always wanted to do something involving real estate and I saw the opportunity to create a glamping site that would be used for short term rentals. Slowing my music business down and retiring from touring was a big decision that alot of people thought I was crazy to do. I had to sell my smaller condos I owned for airbnb, move to a random small city for a year, and sink almost all of my cash I had to build this. I went into major credit debt but I knew the vision and money would work together eventually. We have now grossed more in 6 months than I have ever done with my music in one year and only going up from here now. If I had listened to other people and not took a risk, I’d still be trading my time for money for almost the rest of my life instead of building a company that can sustain itself over time

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I graduated from the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant management. I always wanted to do more restaurant style things but I was lucky enough to make producing music my full time job once I graduated. I took some time off from this hospitality field to tour dj for major rap artist and chase my music dream. After 10 years in music (I still produce music but do not tour now), I realized I wanted to take some of creative skills and my degree into something that could benefit myself and others. We are a luxury glamping site that offers unique stays in one of a kind structures near Houston, Texas. We named it Cameron Ranch Glamping after my brother who passed away due to suicide 15 years. We wanted to create a space that people to relax and revive in nature and reconnect with their loved ones. We also promote and contribute to multiple charities dealing with mental health and sustainability efforts. I am most proud that we have been to keep my brothers legacy going while also helping others fight the stigma around mental health. Our goal is empower everyone to realize it is ok to not be ok and to talk with others more openly. We want to continually expand into new states and areas where nature vacations are common. We love using our creativity to build experiences that you can not get easily anywhere else

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I have a marketing background from music but the main way we have been able to capture almost 50k followers online is through consistency and trial and error. Marketing is simply trying things and analyzing the data that comes back. We realized quickly that working with travel content creators was one of our best ROI’s and running some paid ads on social media/ google. We also make sure to consistently post high quality content that we know the audience will engage with. You have to try short videos, long videos, photos, informational videos, different intro hooks, different vocal tones, etc to see what may work for your business. Don’t get discouraged if one way doesn’t work well for you as you learned that it is not something to spend time on instead. I realized quickly that some of my informational content was not “interesting ” enough for our audience and they actually want to hear the story behind the site more. Sites like Fiverr.com and upwork.com are great for hiring talent to help with creating videos, marketing slides, and more if you have no experience with this.

If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
We are big on getting as much income out of what we own already before expanding. We sell romantic and birth day packages on top of stays, we rent golf carts, we sell fire wood, pizza kits, and more. Add-ons are amazing for increasing your revenue. We also have tried to expand as much on our current land as we can so we still only have 1 tax bill, 1 insurance bill, better logistics for our cleaning team , and more. The same 3 structures make about 50% more on one piece of land rather than spacing them out in different locations we didn’t already own. Maximize what you have the most you can before trying to expand and stretching yourself too thing.
