We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chaysen Beacham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chaysen below.
Chaysen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In short, simply moving out to LA. I come from a small town in NC so to move to one of the largest city’s in the world was at best unpredictable. Breaking into any industry is tough, but I think making a name for yourself in one that doesn’t necessarily have a clear path to success or “corporate ladder” is very daunting. Fortunately I have a very strong work ethic and wasn’t afraid of doing just that, hard work for little to know pay. The film industry is a unique beast, no matter what budget level you’re operating on, your work is always compared to the best of the best, your iconic films, your Oscar winners etc. If I could make it relatable to the real world, and you can quote me on this, It’s like everyone is magically driving Ferraris or Maybach’s and periodically have to drive a car in a different price range and then say whether or not they enjoyed the experience. In general the entire film industry is a risk, little to no job security, fewer clear paths to stability, and a landscape that changes every year with peoples trend happy comforts.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been in the film industry for just about a decade, but have only been in the heart of LA for a little over half of that. I have been fortunate enough to produce for major network television but my true passion and pursuit is in narrative features. I have produced 8 features now, and as of this year will have my directorial debut coming to the market, which has been a wonderful experience all the way around. Thats not to say it was difficult, but something that’s hard can still be enjoyable.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I love the idea of leaving something for future generations to gain something from. Whether it’s watching my mistakes and seeing a path they’d rather take, sharing in a wonderful experience that creates a core memory for them, or more personal something that my family can remember me by. I love creating and I have found so much peace in trusting the up and downs and never taking either of those moments too seriously. If I were to inspire someone even one, I would consider that a success. My favorite film of all time is “The Goonies” and if you know that film you’ll know why I feel that way, it’s a story of perseverance and adventure. One where the little guy keeps the hope alive, and that’s beautiful to me and translates to every industry or passion. It’s tough to be who you are and never give up. Being reminded to keep pushing is powerful and I think we all need that push from time to time.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
COVID! During a time when the entire world was experiencing a tough time every industry was flipped upside down. I was no different, I didn’t work for almost 11 months, was dead broke, savings depleted, and couldn’t even get a job at Habit burger. My personal relationships were stretched beyond repair because my significant other didn’t believe my career choice to be a reliable one. I dont fault her for that view because it never has been. But a friend of mine in my darkest time reminded me that I’m no more unemployed than a cabinet maker or any contractor for that matter. Long story short, I downsized my entire life and rebuilt. I can happily say Im in the best position of my entire career track at this current time and much more prepared to face adversity when it comes knocking again.
