We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angel-Lee Morgan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Angel-Lee , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on so far is one of my own titled “Resurgence; A Journey to Self”. This photo-series explored the experience of starting over, venturing into new territory and welcoming the unknown. I’ve always been a risk-taker, someone who believes in following their heart, but as rewarding as this can be, it isn’t an easy road. In this project I examined the feelings that accompany me on this journey of career change, Anxiety and Self-Doubt and how they can serve as catalysts for growth.
Earlier this year, I made a significant decision to close the doors of my hair salon, reduce operations by 90% and shift my focus. It was a bold move born out of a desire to fully unleash my potential. Before taking this step, I found myself feeling stifled, craving more time and opportunities to express my creativity to its fullest extent.
As I embarked on this career change, anxiety and self-doubt became constant companions. Closing the salon, brought about a wave of uncertainty. Questions like “Am I making the right decision?” and “Can I truly thrive in a different space?” echoed in my mind.
This decision opened a new chapter for me, allowing me to explore Artistry and Creative Direction on a whole new level. I began to see hair not just as strands to be styled but as a canvas to pour my emotions onto. This shift in perspective was nothing short of exhilarating, reigniting my passion for creating.
The process of reinventing myself as an artist and creative director was, at times, overwhelming. The fear of the not knowing what will happen next and the pressure to succeed in a new domain definitely tested my resilience. But as I worked through these feelings and difficult experiences I’ve realized how fulfilling the outcome can be.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

What sets me apart from others in the industry is my diverse skill set. These skills allow me to accurately recreate whatever idea either me or my clients may be envisioning
As I reflect on my journey, what I’m most proud of is my perseverance and the ability to consistently deliver work that is not only visually pleasing but resonates deeply with my audience. My creations are more than just products or services; they are gateways to self-expression and individuality.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is fuelled by my mission to inspire and motivate young Jamaicans to explore more unconventional career paths. We’re all taught from a tender age to go to University, get a degree in order to get a good paying job but I’ve found that as easy as they make it sound, not many young people are privileged enough to afford University and not many resources are available to us either. I want to show people that there are always ways to harness the power of the mind and body to create a better reality for yourself.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being an artist is being able to capture the essence of a moment, a thought, or an emotion and sharing it with the world. Seeing the evolution from a concept in my mind to a visual masterpiece is immensely gratifying. This act of artistic expression, where ideas manifest into something tangible, is what amplifies my passion and makes every creative endeavour uniquely rewarding.
