We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Leigh Dunn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Leigh below.
Leigh, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I feel it’s important to stand out in any industry. I want my clients to feel appreciated, noticed, and served well. I have them choose between fresh flowers or a drink of choice. When I arrive at the appointment, I will bring one or the other. Sometimes, when your home is cluttered and you feel overwhelmed and isolated, you simply need another voice to help process what needs to be kept, thrown away, or donated. This is not an easy process. I want the client to feel treated and make the process as enjoyable as possible.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I had 3 kids in 3 years. It was such a blessing, and it also felt like I had triplets. They were so close in age, and I remember thinking, “I just want someone to come help me. Unload the dishwasher, tidy, and organize my pantry.” This is when Honeydew Handled was born. I’m able to come into clients’ homes and do just that. Sometimes I run errands, do laundry, and return packages to the post office. Other times I’m hired to simply organize a closet. I’ve unpacked boxes and help families settle into their homes, I’ve packed boxes to prepare families to move. I’ve decluttered, organized, and staged homes to prepare for selling. I’ve dropped off donations at local charities. I’ve scheduled clients’ carpets to be cleaned and can wait there while this occurs. Then my clients don’t have to take off work to be present during home maintenance. Think of your “Honey-do List” for you home. I tackle just that.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Becoming Minimalist.com has been a super helpful resource. I remember reading this blog years ago and being encouraged to declutter and simplify my life. There are many deep-rooted reasons we hold on to items in our homes. Joshua Becker, founder of BecomingMinimalist.com, helps process through these ideals and philosophies. I’m currently taking a course from him to learn how to best relate to clients who have a difficult time parting from things. It’s been extremely helpful.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve been on social media for many years. I’ve learned a few tricks about keeping content concise and intriguing. I’ve also done some freelance work for businesses writing blog articles and creating social media content. These skills have helped me create content for Honeydew Handled. I created a businesss page linked to my Facebook profile and also have an account on Instagram. I’ve reached out to other influencers to collaborate and conduct giveaways. Canva also has some great options to create content. I’ve joined various local mom groups on social media, professional organizing groups, and have connected with other personal assistants through LinkedIn. There are so many possibilities. I would just say…take the risk! It’s been wonderful to have the creative freedom to post what I want when I want and write my own blog articles. I adore writing, so I’m sorry to say…I have no desire to utilize ChatGPT.
