We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Light recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lauren thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Yes, I’ve been able to make a full-time living from my work in sync music, and it’s been a journey that’s both challenging and rewarding. My career began in the live music scene, where I spent years touring. I’ve played over a thousand shows everywhere, from college campuses to festivals, and at various venues across the U.S. Those days were filled with hard work, constant travel, and the exhilarating thrill of performing live. There’s something truly magical about connecting with an audience face-to-face, and I absolutely loved it.
However, everything changed when Covid-19 hit. Suddenly, every show I had planned was canceled, and I found myself at a major crossroads. This was when I fully pivoted into sync music. I had already begun exploring this field, but my hectic touring schedule had made it difficult to commit fully. When I finally had the chance to dive deep into sync, I found myself completely captivated by it. It opened up a whole new world for me, and I’ve fallen in love with every aspect of it.
Lauren, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a pop artist, I’ve been fortunate to have a solo career alongside my work in sync music. Sync, short for synchronization, involves integrating music into various forms of visual media like commercials, trailers, TV shows, and films. My music has had the opportunity to be part of several notable projects, with placements in content for Apple, Nike, Hyundai, Volvo, and Dominos, as well as in Netflix trailers like ‘Your Place or Mine,’ and Xbox.
The world of sync music has also allowed me to explore a wide range of genres. Beyond my work as Lauren Light, I’ve created music under over 15 different monikers. This aspect of my career lets me experiment with different styles and expand my musical horizons.
Additionally, I’m the co-owner of twoOHsix Music, a sync agency. We’ve been able to secure placements with well-known brands and productions, including Adidas, Michael Kors, Netflix’s ‘First Kill,’ and ‘All American.’ I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished at twoOHsix Music, particularly our contribution to supporting and uplifting the artist community.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the freedom and versatility that comes with creating. In the artist world, there’s often a pressure to conform, to stick to a specific sound or style. But working in sync music has given me the opportunity to break free from those constraints. Each day is a new adventure – one day, I might be crafting a catchy pop song, the next, I’m diving into the intense atmosphere of a horror trailer, followed by creating an inspiring promo ad, or even a sassy trap track. This variety keeps my creative juices flowing and allows me to continuously explore and grow as an artist.
Additionally, my career has afforded me the incredible opportunity to travel. With a mobile recording setup, I’ve been able to see different parts of the world, drawing inspiration from each new environment. This mobility has not only broadened my horizons but also enriched my life and work. It’s truly a good life, one where I can blend my passion for music with the joy of discovery and new experiences.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
In reflecting on my creative journey, it’s not so much about specific resources I wish I knew about earlier, but more about the mindset I wish I had adopted sooner. The key lesson I learned is the importance of diving in without waiting for perfection. It’s crucial to do your research, of course, but then it’s equally important to trust yourself and take that first step. Embracing the possibility of failure is vital because those moments of failure are where the most valuable learning and growth happen.
Another vital aspect I learned is the power of helping others. In the beginning, especially when entering a new field, admitting that you’re not fully familiar with everything but are willing to lend a hand is invaluable. This approach led me to many custom projects early in my career. Being honest and open about my learning process, and offering to help in any way needed, not only helped me gain experience but also built trust and credibility with clients. It’s this blend of humility, eagerness to learn, and willingness to help that really propelled my growth and understanding in the industry
