We recently connected with Karsten Spencer and have shared our conversation below.
Karsten, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Risks have consistently played a pivotal role in my career journey. Whether it was investing every dollar I had in a new camera, discreetly slipping out of the house to travel from D.C to New York City to shoot for modeling agencies, or even quitting my job to fully commit to honing my craft, I have always embraced risks. Nevertheless, the most significant risk I’ve ever undertaken was the decision to move to the United States. At the age of 17, I departed from my home country, Jamaica, without a clear path ahead. Even upon my arrival, uncertainty lingered, as I had no friends or family to offer guidance on this unfamiliar journey, aside from the conventional advice to pursue a college education. It took considerable time, but I eventually discovered my community. Leaving behind my home, friends, and family to pursue something greater remains the most formidable risk I’ve encountered in my life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Karsten Spencer and I am a Photographer & Director based in New York City & D.C. I’ve always loved photography, I’m proud to say I used to be an iphone photographer. My passion has always lied in capturing the world and people around me in their purest form. When thinking about taking the career seriously, I first entered the film production industry in high school, working as a production assistant for my Aunt’s company, Fareye Film Productions. That mainly included lifting sandbags and getting snacks for everyone on set. After moving to the United States I began to have more opportunities to showcase my skill and have been fortunate to be a part of productions for L’Officiel India, Glamour Bulgaria, Google and a feature film, “Come into my arms” and many of my own incredible personal projects and collaborations. I focus mainly on telling my stories through composition, lighting and always choosing the right muse.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me will never be the work but always the people. It’s a beautiful moment when people come together to bring an idea to life. The people you meet within this industry truly make or break your experience. Thankfully i’ve found my community and have made amazing lifelong friends.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Truthfully, the drive for me is to be the best. The idea of the “best” is sometimes looked down on, after all who can judge what is considered the best in this field. It’s a perspective based job after all. However the idea of mastery and understanding to its fullest of my craft are what drives me to be better with every breath that I take. I come from a country budding with art, entertainment and competition. Perhaps it’s in my blood or heritage but aside from my love for art and creating, I want to truly be the best one day.
