We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jess Hutchens . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jess below.
Hi Jess , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My business name is “Fitset”, which means “Fitness & Mindset in 12 weeks”. I wanted to create a fitness program that was more than just workouts, and really highlight the importance of a good mindset for a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle for the long run. I’ve trained clients for over a decade, and the ones that are successful long term have worked on creating a positive mindset along with their food & workouts.

Jess , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Jess Hutchens, I’m a 34 year old mom to a 2 year old, and I’ve been married for 8 years. I’m passionate about helping busy women like myself find balance & sustainably for the long term, because I’ve tried every fad diet out there and know what it’s like to be frustrated and confused. I’m an online fitness coach now, but I started out as a 3rd grade teacher after college. I got into working out a decade ago when my (now) husband was studying to get into physical therapy school. I loved working out so much that I decided to become a certified personal trainer on the side of teaching, but in 2015 when my dad passed away from suicide, I decided life was too short and quit teaching to pursue my passion. I started my first personal training business and began coaching clients around the valley. In 2019, I began working on creating an online business on the side to help more women reach their goals. Little did I know, this was preparing me for what was to come in 2020. When the gyms closed down in March of 2020, my online business Fitset blew up. I was able to scale and help more women around the country with nutrition, mindset, and working out during such a difficult time in the world. We are almost 4 years in and I still love everything about the business!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started out as a 3rd grade teacher in my early 20’s, but decided it wasn’t the right fit for life. I quit teaching after my dad suddenly passed away, and started an in-home personal training business on a whim. From there, in trained out of a gym, and then went on to create an online business in 2019. Little did I know, this was preparing me for 2020. In March the gyms suddenly closed down, and my online business took off. In such a hard time, we were able to help women take care of themselves even when the gyms were closed.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I am actually married to the Co-CEO of Fitset, Cole. We have been married 8 years and he actually got me into the fitness industry a decade ago. He’s a physical therapist, but in 2020, Fitset became so busy that I needed to scale. He temporarily quit physical therapy to assist me, and now runs our Group Program as I run the 1:1!
