We recently connected with Monica Granados and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My company, MCHARMS came to life like many other companies do, by accident. I have always loved creating, getting involved with arts and crafts & hands-on projects . My mother is a Garden designer and sculptor. She always encouraged me to express myself creatively. MCHARMS started through a volunteer project for my church. We were creating some things to sell for our Christmas bazaar and this morphed into selling jewelry years later. Through that experience I learned that I loved making things and selling things that made people feel happy! Over the years after creating and selling many things to my friends MCHARMS was born! First it was handmade flower pins, next obi belts That repurposed old neckties, and finally jewelry. Jewelry has been my most successful endeavor. It has given me the most satisfaction because there are so many ways to express your creativity through jewelry. I also like that it is an all inclusive type of product to sell! Everyone fits in jewelry and everyone feels beautiful in my jewelry! That makes me proud. I also like that it is sustainable. I use vintage pieces in my designs and repurpose when possible.
Monica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Monica Granados and I’m a mother, wife, & owner of MCHARMS. My business is a family run. I make and design all of the jewelry. My son made my website and runs my marketing, my other son helps with logistics and photography. Recently we have added two more people to the team for marketing and many other roles. When You join the MCHARMS team you take on many roles since we are a small company. It makes one’s job very interesting since you’re involved with so many aspects of the company. The company has been growing ever since Covid. We provide beautiful quality jewelry using the best products and unique designs. I take pride in providing jewelry that is affordable fashion. When people stop me and tell me they recognize my brand, rave about all the compliments they get when they wear my brand it makes me feel so good! I feel blessed to have a job that incorporates everything I love and gives back in so many ways. I also am involved with many charities and love to give back to the community. I also love to collaborate with other local brands and with nonprofit organizations such as Sofia’s hope. I feel it’s important to stay connected to the community that supports me.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
To build my social media audience I turned to see who my target market audience was. During Covid I spent a lot of time working on different marketing campaigns to appeal to this target market audience. I spent a lot of time reading on the Internet and watching YouTube videos to learn how to make video content. I hired a marketing assistant and she helped me navigate the multiple platforms like Tiktok & pinterest . I also began a brand ambassador program. I feel the brand ambassador program really helped me grow the most since the Ambassador‘s are appealing to all of their audiences and sharing my brand.
Have you ever had to pivot?
During Covid my brand exploded in a good way. Luckily the year before my son had created my website and my clientele knew about it and had already been using it. During Covid there was a movement to support small businesses and I was blessed to have many people order and share with their friends. I also had a lot of social media influencers reaching out to do collaborative posts in exchange for jewelry. My Instagram account grew steadily and sales increased organically. MCHARMS grew exponentially! My online business grew and My business became not only pop-ups and in person sales but also sizable online sales. My conversions were flowing naturally but after Covid it slowed down and my struggle has been to keep up with the changing times and current trends to keep growing online. I am now working on creating content and marketing that will keep my online presence growing and a wholesale line as well. I decided to pivot towards wholesale because some new opportunities have come up and I think it will help my brand grow. Learning something new Is a part of owning your own small business. Things are always changing and you have to change with the times or you will become irrelevant and go out of business, it also keeps life interesting.
