Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kelley Rios. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kelley, appreciate you joining us today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
I definitely take vacations. It’s how I keep going. I love to travel & explore and I’ve built my business around the ability to travel. My family loves traveling with me so whenever I have a wedding out of Houston, we turn it into a family vacation. We usually go a few days early & stay a few additional days after the wedding, to make sure we enjoy the city and have some fun. I feel that time off & vacations are paramount to my mental sanity. It’s important to dedicate time to relax, unplug, and really soak in nature, laughter, family & to really just be present. When I do this, I’ve seen my family is happier, I’m able to be more focused & intentional, and my business also, performs better.
My advice to any entrepreneurs would be to take time off. Even if you feel you’re not able to travel, it’s extremely important to detach for a few days from your work flow and give back to yourself. Do something you love to do, and allow your mind to reset so to speak. Your mind & body will thank you and in turn you’ll be able to give your best to your clients and your business.
Kelley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kelley, I’m the face behind Kaptured by Kelley photography. I started my business about 12 years ago but it’s been my passion since I was a little girl. In addition, I’m also a wife & I home school our son. I thrive off creativity, maintaining a dynamic pace, and channeling my passion through the artistry of photography.
I specialize in couples photography, engagements, weddings, elopements, etc but I’ve also worked with families, newborns, graduates, businesses and branding, etc. Aside from shooting and editing, I’m the sole creator and manager of my website, marketing, content creation and more. For an extended period, my husband has been documenting behind-the-scenes footage of my work. Recently, he transitioned into videography specifically for weddings and events, and I greatly appreciate having him with me in this endeavor. Together we create lasting moments for my clients to hold on to for years to come.
I think my photography stands out for the dark & moody editing as well as the documentary & cinematic vibes I aim to capture every session. I create an enjoyable experience for my clients, fostering an environment where they can feel at ease, be authentic, and enjoy a delightful and memorable time together.
I’m proud of my ability to adapt and grow within my business and still be able to nourish my family and marriage. I take pride in my progress, embracing challenges as opportunities to evolve and broaden my perspectives.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I feel like my social media presence started to grow once I stopped worrying about perfection and started focusing more on being more personal. I tend to be very shy and I’m not a huge fan of posting a ton about myself, but once I began to be more intentional about interacting with my followers, communicating and engaging with them more, posting a little more about myself and who I am or what my life is like outside of Kaptured by Kelley, this is when I noticed growth on social media.
My advice to anyone new to social media, would be consistency and authenticity. Don’t be afraid to talk about your “why”. Why are you doing this? What makes you wake up in the morning and want to crush your goals? That’s your why. For example, I have a strong passion for capturing couples madly in love through my photography. So I aim to capture love through my perspective, and post about it so my followers can share the emotional resonance I experience when I look through my lens. When you find your why, focus on it and pursue your ambitions with that in mind. Post about what lights your soul on fire, and help others see why it’s so incredible.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe it’s my personality. I can see how my kindness and my ability to build a friendship with my clients is what has helped my reputation as Kaptured by Kelley. I don’t treat them as just another customer on my list. I strive to learn about them, I ask them questions to draw out their personalities & learn their story about how they met and even how they love each other. Some couples are very serious and reserved, some are bubbly and carefree and this makes my experience so fun. Each couple is different, each has a different story to tell and I love hearing it. I love connecting with my clients and building lasting relationships.
