We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elio Chalhoub a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Elio thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents were master architects of my character. They taught me the value of kindness, love, and power of standing up for myself and others. They let me navigate life’s challenges solo. My dad’s mantra was, “Learn to stand strong on your own; for one day I will not be around and I want to know you will be alright.”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
A passionate filmmaker and musician with a unique journey that blends the worlds of cinema, extreme sports, and live music.
My story began in 2011 when I enrolled to learn about cinema and film. Simultaneously, I explored an approach to skill exchange, I offered free videos to professional athletes in exchange for lessons in various extreme sports. Such as rock climbing, water sports and western sports.
This method opened doors and opportunities for me, sometimes even offered me job contracts, providing me with invaluable insights into dynamic movement, and client approach at a very young age, which later became a big asset to my personal and comminication skills.
During my university years, I also pursued a parallel passion for music. As a live performer, I founded three bands, and worked at a 100% musician, It was my source of income during my film studies. This dual pursuit of film and music created a rich mix of skills that I take pride in. Whether I’m capturing the adrenaline of extreme sports or creating musical compositions, my work is an integration of those two diverse influences.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The first words that comes to my head are, Self-Expression, Innovation, Emotional Release. Ofcourse there are always the rough side of being an independent artist, such as having to deal with criticism, the financial gambling as every day looks different to the other. But there is a sense of beauty in this, somehow it shows you that life is written for you, and wherever you are at the moment in your life, if you look back, you realise that every decision you took lead you to where you are today. It is something that cannot be explained yet to be trusted.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Investing in top-notch equipment and materials took my creative work to a whole new level in terms of quality and innovation. I wish I had taken this step sooner. Sometimes, we’re bursting with ideas and energy, yet fear holds us back from acquiring the necessary tools. Little did I realize that investing in these tools not only unlocks the potential for bringing our ideas to life but also opens doors for personal and professional growth.
