Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kirstie Young. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kirstie, appreciate you joining us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
In my industry, there is such backlash and bulling in regards to what programs you use to create and how you create and why. I believe using programs other than Adobe to start for brainstorm your project and ideas is something that needs to be embraced, Adobe programs are the elite but there are other programs that do help with the process such as canva. I was so against learning this program that it took me about 6 months to come to the realization that it actually helps my thought and design process with quick access to elements so that I could go back and refine them within the Adobe products. Many in my industry see that as a flaw because “you didn’t use what everyone else does”. Well, I’m not like everyone else, I’m unique and do things the way I learn and grow.
Kirstie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! I’m Kirstie and I am a Graphic Designer. For most of my life I knew art was where I’d fall in career wise. I was always drawn to the Graphic Design / creative part of the art world. From middle school I started my journey into the field of Graphic Design and haven’t looked back. I went to college, received a Bachelors of Fine arts in Graphic Design with a minor in Illustration and Photography. Since graduating, I moved into working for a small family owned business and loved it. This business is what inspired me to create my own brand / business and put myself out there more.
Outrageous Creations LLC is a full service graphic design company that I own and operate. I not only create designs, I create brands for my clients and am able to provide the ability to build and grow their business by creating sticker, apparel, rough websites (because I do not code) ect…
The way Outrageous Creations is different from others in the industry would be that I listen and communicate with my clients/customers and their needs/wants on a project rather than just jumping into it without any of the clients input. I show compassion and reliability as well because I continue to update clients throughout the process rather than just disappearing and then showing back up with a completed piece.
The main thing to know about Outrageous Creations is that its woman owned, creative and willing to help on any scale of projects! We also do dance floor wraps as a newer part of the business and help set up events and graphics as well! We are into many niches of the industry and overlap with several other industries to make things happen. We are all about team work and a fun work environment.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect I would say is when the client is so so so happy and jumping for joy that their vision has come to life. I love being able to see the project come full scale and being able to make my clients happy as they normally continue coming back to work with us and recommend us for future projects!
Have you ever had to pivot?
My husband (and business partner) have had to pivot a few times from the business due to life and careers. Unfortunately we’ve been hit with several circumstances within the last few years that we have had to put the business on the back burner because we couldn’t focus on it as we were trying to keep a roof over our heads. We’ve had recently started back with the business but very seldom due to again life. Having a full time job, managing a side business and being the breadwinner is very difficult but through this harder period of business set up we have learned patience and to value ourselves and our time. We have changed a couple of our core values as a company to lean in the middle of us and a client so that we start at a level playing field on any and all new projects. With what life throws at you, we persevered and are trying to build us and the business back up better than ever!
