We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brandi Denslow. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brandi below.
Brandi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
In the photography industry it has become pretty standard to label yourself as either a documentary or editorial photographer, especially in the wedding world. For me, labels have never really served to explain what type of art I create. It is a mixture of many different styles, a collaboration with my clients, and a focus on telling their story in a unique and creative way. I am a pose heavy photographer which helps my work look more editorial but I also love to capture those candid, in between moments. Life is not linear, and neither should a photographer’s work be.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Brandi Denslow of Brandi Denslow Photography, an editorial wedding and portrait photographer based in Saint Augustine, Florida. I have been shooting weddings for over 20 years. I started a film photography club in high school and spent most of my days in a darkroom, teaching myself and others the love of film. I shot my first wedding when I was 17 with my Dad’s old camera and seven rolls of film and it just became an obsession for me after that. One of the biggest obstacles most clients of mine share before we work together is how uncomfortable and awkward they feel in front of the camera. Don’t we all! However, by collaborating with my clients and including them in the planning process of their session or wedding day, it truly helps break down those insecurities and creates confidence in themselves and me long before we shoot together. At our core as humans, we crave connection and the need to be seen. By getting to know my clients, their mannerisms, likes and dislikes, love languages, etc. and by simply asking how they want to feel when looking at their photos I am able to direct them in front of my lens in ways that make them feel empowered, beautiful and the best versions of themselves. As a photographer, my job is to make it all look easy- which it is, if you plan, prepare and collaborate with your clients.
I want the people I’m photographing to feel powerful, sexy, and original. I love to create concepts around who they are and where they are at in life. I bring a lot of creative direction, posing, and fun to my shoots. More than anything I create an experience that makes them feel comfortable, included and a little badass.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I am a bit of a rule-breaker and I hate to follow the herd. I am constantly inviting my clients to do the same, owning their own confidence and being unapologetic about it. Subconsciously we all crave that kind of energy. The way I photograph my clients also invites a bit of this rebelliousness for them and for me that is the most rewarding part of what I do. I love to watch people open up, let go of expectations and just truly live in the moment. Getting to create beautiful art with them through photography is just a bonus.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
When it comes to having an effective strategy for growing my clientele, it comes down to one simple thing. Treat others kindly. Building healthy, positive relationships with them creates an experience they can’t wait to tell others about. 90% of my bookings have come from word of mouth and because of the way I treated and made my clients feel. They are important. Their story is important. For me, my business is about people more than the photography, and I value creating an experience for them that makes them feel loved, seen, and connected.
