Chania, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s one of the most important lessons you learned in school?
The most important lesson I learned during college is to be present, have patience, and enjoy the now. I learned a few things, but they all play a role individually. I look back now that I have graduated and am out of school, wishing that I would have just enjoyed the “now” simply because there is so much beauty in the present moment, but at the time, I did not understand that. College was a pivotal time for me, and at that time, I was in a rush, ready to get to the next thing, ready to be in my career and graduate. However, taking time to reflect, I’ve learned it’s not about the destination. It is more about the journey and trusting the process, so those lessons have allowed me to look at things from a different perspective.

My name is Chania and I am from Morrilton, AR. I am a graduate of Henderson State University. I enjoy listening to podcasts, reading, weight training, practicing yoga, and modeling occasionally. I am also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. My passion for fashion led me to start this business, and my sense of style allowed me to attract my supporters. My business is a women’s clothing boutique called Pretty Hustler Collection. I started my business in 2020 during college as a side hustle selling shoes. I got inspired to start my boutique from many supporters telling me they would love for me to sell clothing. I am also a fashionista myself, so it was very aligned with my passion. I always received compliments about my style or individuals asking me where I get my pieces from, where I shop, etc. My clothing boutique was a way for me to express my style and also a way for me to help others do so. Pretty Hustler Collection was founded to empower ambitious women to feel pretty, paid, and confident. When you feel good, you look good. As The Pretty Hustler, I aim to inspire confidence and ambition in women everywhere. Whether you’re a CEO, a student, a home mom, or anything in between, you can be the hustler you are meant to be. The Pretty Hustler Collection is not just a brand but a lifestyle.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell through my own platform. I choose this option because I believe that it is the best option for me to promote my business and reach my personal goals. Additionally, maintaining and updating the website can be time-consuming and may require technical skills or hiring a web developer. It can also be challenging to compete with bigger online retailers or marketplace platforms that have established customer bases and brand recognition. Marketing and promoting the website to attract customers and drive traffic can also be a hurdle, especially without the support of a physical storefront or established presence in the industry. Despite these challenges, having my own website offers more control, personalization, and direct interaction with my customers, which can be advantageous in the long run.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
By being genuine and true to myself, I am able to connect with my target audience on a deeper level. People appreciate authenticity and can sense when someone is being genuine. They are more likely to trust and support a brand that is aligned with the values and personality of its creator. In addition to being my true self, I also ensure that my brand reflects my character and values. I carefully choose each piece and clothing I have making sure they resonate with both my target audience and myself. Many businesses, especially in the fashion industry, may create a brand that doesn’t truly represent who they are. This can make it difficult to connect with customers and build trust. When customers see me and my brand as one, they can envision themselves being a Pretty Hustler. This reliability helps to grow my clientele as people feel a personal connection to my brand. Overall, the most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been staying true to myself and embodying my brand. This authenticity allows potential clients to connect with me on a personal level, building trust and attracting them towards my brand.
