We were lucky to catch up with Alex Heinrikson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Honestly, I’m not the type of person that believes in regrets. I think everything happens when it is meant to and that you learn something from every experience. I did not start my career in hair until after I had my son and I definitely believe he really inspired me to be more successful and be a better person. I do not think I would have had the same career had I started before I had him, because my motivations would’ve been completely different.

Alex, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I did not start doing hair until after I had a few years of college under my belt, and it was important to me to have a career that I enjoyed going to every day-which just so happened to be hair!
I do mostly balayage and lived-in hair. I have found that most of my guests enjoy that it is lower maintenance and natural looking. I also recently started offering handtied extensions which I’m really excited about! The longer I am in the industry the more passionate I am about the aspect of hair that helps people. Sure I enjoy that it’s creative and pretty but I also really care about helping people whether that be with hair loss, wanting longer hair, a healthier scalp, needing to feel better aesthetically etc.
I think my guests really appreciate my honesty as well as how accepting and understanding of a person I am. I give them options as far as hair products, color, cuts, and options within their beauty budgets. I also take continuing education seriously and strive to give my guests the best experience and service I can. They invest a lot in their hair and it’s only right that I do the same! You won’t catch me being the stylist that refuses to learn new techniques and styles.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I definitely think there are a lot of misconceptions about the beauty industry.
I am an independent hairstylist which means I’m self employed. I am the CEO, CFO, and the talent. I handle everything myself for the most part: booking, messaging, consultations, the actual service, bookkeeping, budgeting, education, practice, stocking, etc. You name it, if my business needs it to function and succeed I’m the one doing it.
We surprisingly need a lot of education on chemistry, anatomy, biology, health, physics, and business!

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Absolutely and that’s education options. You can learn so much from other stylists, whether that’s shadowing, assisting, or online/in person education and education subscriptions. Everyone has a different way of doing things and we have so much to offer one another! Learn from anyone you can!
