We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful ANITRA DAVIS. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with ANITRA below.
ANITRA, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My love for baking started on Christmas Day when at 6 years old I received an Easy Bake oven. My absolute favorite gift of all time. I always found myself being in charge of the desserts during holiday gatherings with family and friends, yet I didn’t take baking seriously at all until a few years back. Just out of boredom I started trying new recipes and taking them to work so my co-workers could rate them. That turned into me taking orders for my red velvet cupcakes. Payday Fridays became Red Velvet Fridays. It started to be a pretty good side hustle but I still didn’t have the full confidence that I can move to the next level.
My mom and my aunt were biggest supporters and for my birthday that year they chipped in and purchased me my first Kitchen Aid. They not only invested in me, but they believed in me and I couldn’t let them down, so I started researching home based baking businesses and now here we are…

ANITRA, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the owner of Nikkisweetbag LLC, which is a home based baking business that specializes in baking customized luxury cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and gourmet candy apples. I am a one woman show, self taught baker and what sets me apart is that I am me. I enjoy what I do, and my goal is that my customers will have a memorable experience with each bite!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My mom was my biggest supporter and cheerleader. I would oftentimes find myself calling my mom complaining because I felt like one of my cakes wasnt designed pretty enough and that I just wanted to throw it away and refund my client their money. My mom would always say, are you crazy, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that cake and you are just too hard on yourself. In February of this year, my mom passed away, but now everytime I take on an order or even attempt to downplay my gift, I hear my mom’s voice telling me to keep going. I have to keep going, I have no choice.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson that I had to unlearn is that even though people have said you have your whole life to do this or that…it’s not true. Not operating in a gift that you know you have been blessed with because of the fear of failing is still failing.
