Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yue (Yolanda) Dong. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yue (Yolanda), thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
A recent client success story that stood out to me was about my work on the brand identity for Dual-X, a gaming studio comprising female artists. This was an independent project initiated by USC & SCAD.
The project was driven by a team of extremely young and talented female artists. To showcase their creativity and amplify their voices, USC worked intimately with the SCAD artists to redefine their gaming brand. The Dual-X Game Studio’s Female Artists Initiative aimed to break stereotypes and highlight the diverse talent within their team. They faced the challenge of creating a brand identity that not only reflected the artistic prowess of the team but also conveyed a message of empowerment and inclusivity.
The redesigned, unique, and inclusive brand identity helps to increase awareness and recognition of the studio and its games, strengthens user community engagement, and is a tangible expression of the client’s desire to participate in the 2024 Gaming Expo with good results.
The new brand identity not only reflects the incredible talent within our Female Artists Initiative but also sends a powerful message about the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the gaming industry. It has ignited a sense of pride and unity among our artists, and the positive reception from the community has been overwhelming.
Yue (Yolanda), before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am from China, Now am a multidisciplinary visual desiased in Atlanta, specializing in graphic design and UI/UX design. And I have studied in the UK on exchange. Specialize in visual identity, branding, packaging, and UI/UX design. I’m pasextraordinarilybout creating visual languages that surprised & delighted, and explore a deep-rooted strategy.
A big part of the reality that made me a digital artist or visual designer, UI & UX designer comes from the push of work. Since 2016-17 I’ve been actively trying to design web, app for some brand clients and trying to iterate more features and visual interface designs for them that are more in line with the market user habits. At the same time I was encouraged by internationally renowned designers Michel de Boer and Min Wang, and was determined to continue on this design path and try more interesting and experimental digital designs.
I am currently working for a software company in the US, in the UX design industry, conducting user research, analysis, desiteration for products. To seek for better market development. I alsoand a visual designer for some brands on identity and service design. I will continue to advance my work in these areas in the future as well.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Based on current trends and advancements in technology, there are some potential directions that the digital industry may take over the next 5-10 years. I will focus more on the greater adoption of augmented and virtual reality: Augmented and virtual reality technologies are already transforming industries like gaming, education, and healthcare. Over the next decade, they will likely become more mainstream, expanding into areas such as e-commerce, marketing, and product design.
In my view, NFTs provide a way for digital artists and creators to monetize their work, establish ownership, and create a new market for digital assets. Additionally, the transparency and security provided by blockchain technology help prevent fraud and ensure the provenance of digital creations.
Since 2022 I have been researching the value of digital art in virtual worlds and trends in the career development of designers in a dissertation: The role of graphic design in virtual space & metaverse.
The later emergence of the concept of meta-universe and the well-defined concept of NFT made my line of research clearer. In 2023 I also tried to research the launch of a virtual art platform suitable for artists to create and discuss. As NFTs introduce a relatively new concept to many users, designers may face the challenge of creating interfaces that effectively As
NFTs introduce a relatively new concept to many users, and designers may face the challenge of creating interfaces that effectively communicate the value proposition of NFTs and guide users through buying, selling, and managing digital assets.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I once almost left the art and design industry because I thought I had no artistic talent. The well-known Dutch designer, educator, and artist Mr. Joost Roozekrans encouraged me and helped me stay in the industry. To this day, I am grateful for his inspiration. I have become a designer based on facts and logic. I may not be comparable to many talented people in the industry, but I am still happy about it.
I have significantly benefited from his book, How to Create Better Ideas. Over the years, we have also kept in touch to discuss industry trends and the current state of design. I believe that industry communication keeps my thinking and ideas moving forward.
