We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charlotte Woodhead. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charlotte below.
Charlotte , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
Yes, Yes, Yes. I have actually just returned from a weeks holiday in Kaui.
It’s been a very tough year both personally and professionally. Being a person that works at 110% all year round, I know I need to take regular breaks, to recharge, refocus and gain perspective.
It is important for us to take holidays, allowing us to pause and enjoy the fruits of our labour. What is the point in working so hard if we don’t find real moments with family and friends to enjoy them.
Put in place a team that you trust, and go away – I am fairly sure that in one weeks vacation, very little will happen that can not be course corrected when you return.
My philosophy for my team is that they should also feel encouraged and supported to go on holiday and switch their phones and disconnect. They will be happier and more motivated, to work somewhere that supports them as individuals.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, My name is Charlotte Woodhead and I am the Managing Director and Executive Producer of Rigby Industries.
For 20 years I’ve produced commercials, music videos, short films and documentaries – With experience as an Executive Producer, I have produced projects for Iconoclast in London, Biscuit Filmworks in London and Los Angeles plus CANADA in LA. I have been fortunate enough to work with world renowned Directors including Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast), James Grey (AdAstra), Rick Famuyiwa (The Mandalorian), Sean Baker (The Florida Project), and Steve MCQueen (12 Years a Salve). I’ve worked with a diverse range of on screen talent such as Amy Winehouse, Johnny Depp, Elle Fanning and James Earl Jones.
Rigby Industries acts as a production consultancy, bridging the gap for foreign companies and creatives intending to establish a production company in the US. These companies require assistance and guidance in navigating cultural and financial differences in the models of operation in the US.
The company provides consulting services to Directors, enabling them to understand how to work in the American system. Additionally, it provides guidance on how to pitch ideas to advertising agencies and Fortune 500 Marketing Executives. I have experience working for French, German, British, Spanish, Thai, Indian and US companies, allowing Rigby Industries to competently and expertly provide production strategies, and a firm foundation to film in the US.
The successes we’ve accomplished includes building a clients roster from 7 directors to 14 working directors in the US market. Taking a production company from start up to full fledged and upping billings by 75%. Helping one of our clients create a relevant, exciting production company, which resonates with the American aesthetic.
I am most excited by creative work… where we get to so something different and the work stands out, for all the right reasons.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Managing a full time team has been a learning curve. We have a permanent team of 4. Each person has different needs and ways of responding to situations. My role is to make each team member work well within a team, as each one is a vital cog. In a sense I am the oil!
Some of our team work remotely and I strongly believe communication keeps everyone on an even playing field. We have regular check ins, to make sure everyone knows what is on the same page.
We have recently brought on a HR consultancy – who have been a wonderful asset and Jordan Peabody helped open up our approach to looking after the team and gina a wider perspective.
Currently we are looking at changing to unlimited holiday, so our team feel they can create a work life balance that works for them.
We believe strongly in diversity and have created a company built on equality and an understanding of all genders and race.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Even though we work in TV and online advertising, word of Mouth is ultimately the best way to grow any business.
This means we need to always think about the bigger picture when we are on any job. We must and always will endeavour to be on the forefront of the zeitgeist, being a step ahead of our competitors, seeing the forthcoming trends in commercial film making.
So important to me is to treat everyone fairly and with kindness. There are no individuals, we work as a team.
Always, expect to be judged on your last job.
All of this helps keep you on the right track for building a stable business.
