We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mallory Green a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mallory thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
Looking back, I wish I had started my business just a year earlier. I started my digital marketing agency 10 days after my second child was born, and while I took my time in setting up my business and spending as much time as I could with my daughter, all of my free time was poured into finding clients, freelancing, and launching REINS Marketing. It wasn’t until five months later, when I had a decent amount of clients and could balance life as a mom and small business owner, that I finally fell into some kind of a groove.
Had I started my business in early to mid-2020, perhaps I could have used the time in lockdown to my advantage, and made all my newbie mistakes as a new business owner within those first six months, promoted REINS online and launched my website, and had my first few clients all lined up while working part time remotely. The transition could have been a bit more smooth from working a 9 – 5 to launching my own digital marketing agency, but I took my time and gave myself grace as a new mom and business owner.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been in the marketing world for six years. After graduating from the University of San Francisco, I began as a marketing intern and later a marketing specialist for one of the leading hospitality management companies in the US. As I began to branch out into email marketing, social media management, and copywriting, I began to wonder if I could create my own agency one day and leave the 9 – 5 life.
Fast forward five years later, and I now have my own copywriting and digital marketing agency, and specialize in email newsletters, content writing, and social media for boutique and independent hotels. What sets REINS Marketing apart from the rest of the other agencies out there is that we tailor your social media strategy to your specific hotel amenities and strengths. We focus on what guests constantly rave about at your hotel or restaurant and make sure your audience is connected to you – online and on social media.
I am most proud of building my business on a part-time basis, while being a stay-at-home mother, and working with clients who I want to work with. It keeps me motivated to continue to learn, grow, and learn from my mistakes!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The hospitality and tourism industry is a huge market, and it’s making a record rebound after the pandemic lockdown from the last two years. It helped that I stayed in close contact with connections in the industry and was able to reach out to these contacts in the beginning phase of my business. Trust and loyalty are what helped me build my reputation in the hospitality field, and I was able to grow quickly after I focused solely on social media management and really niched down on my offers and specialty.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My website! Having an engaging and informational website that has a picture of you, your purpose, your business, and how you can help people is so important in growing your clientele and reaching new people every day.
