We recently connected with Shanelle Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanelle, thanks for joining us today. Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
The most amazing boss that I’ve ever had was when I used to work at the Boys & Girls Club. That job has to date been my favorite job. The work we were doing wasn’t always enjoyable but one thing for sure is I was happy coming to work everyday. My old bosses name is Jason Torrez is the name of my old boss and he is to date the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time). He was super inclusive, he would acknowledge all racial injustices not just with our staff but with the students. He left space for us to be able to express ourselves and voice our opinions. He empowered us and backed us up his loyalty to equality was and always be 1000%. To this day we still talk and he will ride for us forever, the world’s best boss by far!
Shanelle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Shanelle Robinson, I am a Colorado native born and raised. I’ve always been an athlete and had a passion for fitness. As I grew older I saw a huge need to positively impact my community. More specifically the black and brown community as we had a multitude of health risk, the longevity of our lives are heavily impacted, and our overall mental health has seen a serious decline. I think the biggest issue I have been able to discover for our community has been that you don’t have to be perfect or a super strong bodybuilder, you just have to keep your body moving and not stagnant. In any capacity you’d be surprised the mental shift it’ll have on your life. I know the one thing that sets me apart from the billion of other people that are on the fitness train is I’m energetic, have a passion for people and most importantly I’m not perfect. We all go through the woe’s of life and being transparent is truly a gem in this day and age.
The thing that I am most proud about when it comes to my business is an annual event that I host called Adult Field Day. Where adults get together to have a few hours of good clean fun, playing old nostalgic childhood games like kickball, dodgeball, three legged race, tug of war and so much more. At this event I also have local small businesses who come to showcase their business and also gain more following with the community participation. It’s my give back to the community last yr was our first one and we have a winter edition coming up on 12/16 that I’m super excited for.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social Media is CONSTANTLY changing and evolving. With such a huge audience that has access to the internet I think it’s important to stay authentic. So many people put up fronts and project the perfect lifestyle, but there is so much more to be gained from authenticity. I know for myself when I’m watching people create online I hold that to such a higher value. I’m still building my brand but there are a multitude of things that play into that. More clients, more stories, more events, more promotion. It’s a full time job really.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Absolutely yes! I started taking my fitness seriously back in 2018 and really began to see significant strides back in 2020. When all the gyms were closed and we had access to literally NOTHING. I had to get real creative and I’ve always been a fitness enthusiast. One day I was sitting at home with Covid for the second time wondering how I could make better use of my time and monetize my habits. When you’re left to quarantine for days upon end the thoughts just don’t stop. I started to use all my down time to write out the vision of my business and build workout plans. It was genuinely the happiest I’ve been in awhile.
Aside from my annual Adult Field Day event one of my biggest milestones was the results that came after training my cousin. He was the one person who stayed committed to the program & ended up losing 20+ lbs in the course of 3 months. It was also very reassuring seeing the trust that he invested to me come full circle.
