We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Lynn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Jessica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
Great question! Before opening my own studio, I worked at HEART&SKIN Tattoo Studio in Fort Collins, CO. I also completed my tattoo apprenticeship there, learning under their studio’s owner. This came with the additional benefit of learning how a premium tattoo studio should be run and the standards to hold yourself and other artists to. I made my way up to manager at HEART&SKIN, soaking in as much information about the business as I could.
Although all of the logistics are important, the most important lesson that I’ve learned about being a business owner in the tattooing industry is how important it is for an owner to respect the artists that work with them. I strive to create an environment within my studio that my fellow artists are proud to work at, that encourages their creativity, and that supports their individual goals as artists as well as human beings.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Of course! My name is Jessica Lynn and I am a tattoo artist in Northern Colorado. I specialize in black and grey realism. Some of my favourite things to tattoo include animals, portraits, botanicals, surreal concepts, and all things nerdy and whimsical. I’m also well known for my large scale nature scenes and landscape tattoos.
I also recently opened my own tattoo studio in Loveland, CO called SYNAPSE Tattoo Studio. We are a woman owned and operated tattoo studio that works on an appointment-only basis. My goal as a business owner in the tattoo industry is to provide clean, safe, warm and welcoming studio to our clients while actively supporting local artists in our community.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think most female business owners can agree that, at least in the beginning, there is this strong “need” to prove yourself. Whether it’s to friends and family, other professionals in the industry, or sometimes even yourself – “I’ve got this” is a constant reassurance.
There have been influences that have created obstacles throughout my journey, for sure. There were many days that I’d stop and wonder, “Do I really ‘got’ this?” And when an outside perspective, a perspective that you respect, tells you that you’re not good enough, it can be hard not to believe it.
It’s amazing what drive and resiliency can do for us. Actively choosing to see challenges as tools for growth and strength, and finding motivation in the negative and unproductive criticisms of others does pay off. If giving up isn’t an option, it’s amazing where you can take yourself.

Have you ever had to pivot?
There are a lot of times in my life where I’ve had to pivot. Life throws everyone for a loop from time to time. I think it’s important to maintain some level of flexibility in life, specifically in understanding that things won’t always go according to plan.
My journey into becoming a business owner has been a completely unexpected ride. I had seen a completely different avenue for myself. Although I was ready to take that next professional step, I had a pretty different goal in mind than what came to fruition.
And I’m so thankful for this! It’s been a heck of a journey with way more twists and turns than expected, but I’ve created something beautiful out of all of that chaos.
