Before attending seminary, I went to bartending school. In a class about bar room etiquette, we learned it’s best not to talk about three things: sex, politics and religion. Later in a college class on Ethics and Morality for Practical Christian Ministry, I learned there are similar taboos that monitor pastoral, therapeutic, professional and social relationships. Yet, we as a culture are obsessed with sex, confounded by the political landscape and are divided by, embarrassed of, or apathetic to religion. Instead of ignoring complicated topics and themes in the mundane daily interactions and important relationships, we can learn to talk differently in order to hear, learn, process and grow. If we confront our conflicts instead of avoiding them, and to discuss difficult topics with dignity, there is healing for the individual soul and transformation for our families and communities. Being an author who writes primarily romance and urban fantasy, one of the stereotypes that I disagree with is that we’re not real authors and we write for bored housewives. The romance genre has many sub genres and tropes, and it is also a billion-dollar industry. The days of call us a genre for bored housewives are gone. We write and build new rich words, and create a dynamic story that will engage readers. The romance aspect of the book just serves to enhance the story, by intricately weaving in a love connection between a hero and heroine, that builds a foundation and slowly moves towards a happily ever after or a happy for now. From its inception, the romance genre was not just about the romantic elements but the story that is created around it. The industry has grown to massive proportions an encompass anything from horror to thrillers, so that stereotypical thinking about our work is wrong. Read more>>
