We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ron Tyler Jr. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ron below.
Ron, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
So, picture this – it’s 2020, the world is in chaos, and along comes Covid-19 crashing the party. Yeah, that was the backdrop when I decided to take a leap of faith, right on the verge of realizing a dream – my very own production studio. Talk about timing, huh?
Just before the March 15th, 2020, shutdown, I went all-in, investing big in a space to expand my production company, PAYUS Productions. Now, here’s where it gets interesting. While the world hit pause, I was hitting play on a risky venture. Friends and family thought I was a bit nuts – and honestly, they might’ve had a point.
The pandemic hit, and the entertainment industry, my turf, took a massive hit. Independent projects, usually more flexible, were suddenly stuck in limbo too. People were questioning my decisions left and right. The air was thick with doubt.
But you know what? I’m a firm believer in the “If you build it, they will come” mantra. And by “they,” I mean the crowd. Sure, it was a massive risk – putting a chunk of my hard-earned money into a venture when the future was as clear as mud. Money was tight, and each day threw a new financial curveball at me. I even had to tap into the bank and family for support. Stressful times, to say the least.
Fast forward three months post the initial shutdown – the studio doors swung open for a soft opening. It was a win against all odds. My determination and belief in my vision became my guiding lights through the storm.
Since we opened up, we’ve had celebs, reality stars, and influencers grace our studio. Living Rap Legend KRS One, Comedian Lou Young III, Justin and Ami McClure, even the BET Networks fam – just to name a few.
What was once a vision clouded by doubt and financial struggles now stands tall as a testament to my guts and persistence. Against all odds, Tyler Studios became a hub for creativity, reflecting my faith that a spirit as small as a mustard seed can move mountains, not just in art but in life. Challenges turned into a masterpiece of determination, tenacity, and the pursuit of a dream.
So, that’s a little snippet of my pandemic journey. Sometimes, you just gotta roll the dice, see where they land, and go with your gut feeling.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Ron Tyler Jr., and my journey through the entertainment world has been a rollercoaster of challenges, achievements, and a deep commitment to keeping it real. Originating from East Cleveland, Ohio, I found refuge in the arts and sports, using them as an escape from the challenges of the neighborhood.
During my high school years, I navigated Euclid High School, eventually landing at The Ohio State University. While majoring in Business Management with a Finance concentration and briefly playing varsity football, my love for the arts steered me towards a minor in theatre and performing arts—a decision that would alter my trajectory.
After receiving my Bachelor of Science degree, I spent six years in the banking industry, but my heart longed for a more expressive path. In 2010, I took a bold step, relocating to Atlanta, Georgia, for a full-time career in entertainment.
Atlanta became my canvas, a place where I secured roles in major TV productions like Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, Steve Harvey Show, VH1’s Single Ladies, BET’s The Game, and Being Mary Jane. Serving as an understudy for icons like Ludacris, Michael Ealy, and Pooch Hall added depth to my artistic journey.
Transitioning from actor to producer and director felt like a natural evolution, armed with experience, knowledge, and an insatiable creative vision. This evolution birthed PAYUS Productions, settled in Atlanta, GA, at Tyler Studios.
Through PAYUS Productions, I offer a platform for authentic storytelling. From independent TV/film productions to my upcoming podcast/talk show, “Tyler Uncovered,” I bring unfiltered stories and up-close interviews with celebrities and influencers. It’s more than entertainment; it’s about creating experiences and connecting with the audience on a personal level.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the launch of PAYUS Productions and Tyler Studios. These ventures serve not only for my projects but also as spaces to support and guide others in their creative endeavors.
What sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity and partnerships. Transitioning from being in front of the camera to shaping stories behind it, I have a dual perspective that enhances my work’s quality. I believe in lifting others as I climb, and that spirit is ingrained in all I do.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that my brand is about more than just entertainment; it’s about creating meaningful connections and leaving a positive impact. Whether through my productions, mentorship programs, internships, or community collaborations, I’m here to make a difference and continue evolving in this industry.
And just to clarify, this is not “Tyler Perry Studios” but “Tyler Studios,” named after me. While I admire Tyler Perry’s story and the empire he built, I’m carving my path. It’s interesting that we both have “Tyler” in our names and operate in the same city. One day, I hope my brand will be as influential as his.
Fun Fact: Before moving to Atlanta, I briefly joined the Air Force Reserve while pursuing my acting career. However, I was honorably discharged after serving just under 12 years as a reservist, as my full commitment to business ownership took shape, marking the establishment of PAYUS Productions and Tyler Studios.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Absolutely, when exploring influential resources that have shaped my entrepreneurial mindset, one standout piece is “Lucky Me,” a book authored by Rich Paul, a childhood friend and now a sports agent and business partner of LeBron James. This book struck a chord with me on various levels, providing valuable insights and resonating with shared experiences. Here are some key takeaways:
Growing up in East Cleveland, Glenville, and Euclid, OH, I navigated through environments similar to those Rich Paul describes. Witnessing drug dealing and the everyday happenings on the streets was part of my upbringing. The familiarity of seeing drug dealers, who were not just faceless figures but sons of mothers and grandmothers I knew, shaped my early experiences and toughness as a kid.
Rich Paul’s narrative on personal growth during his upbringing echoes my journey. Coming from a Southern background, much like half his family migrating from the south to the north, I learned valuable lessons and codes of conduct in the streets. Rich emphasizes applying the street code to real business settings, and this aligns with my belief. His insights in the book about patience, organization, and staying ready for opportunities deeply resonate, especially in the entertainment business.
The emphasis on financial stability in Rich Paul’s book is crucial and particularly relevant as a black man. Monetizing passion, making a living from it, and supporting others is a significant goal. Finding financial stability while pursuing one’s true purpose is a key factor in the entrepreneurial journey.
The influential role of Rich Paul’s father mirrors the impact my own father has had on my life. Having a real father figure, especially as a young black boy, is vital. My father, a hustler and a man of many trades, has been my role model, always ensuring the well-being of our family.
While my dad has been an influential figure, I’ve found myself inclined toward more risk-taking, perhaps inheriting this trait from my grandfather. My grandfather, a skilled pool shark, relied on gambling games to provide for the family. I’ve heard stories of how, when things were good, they were great, but when the tides turned, it was a tough downward spiral. This legacy of risk-taking has played a significant role in shaping my approach to entrepreneurship.
Rich Paul’s insights on the importance of balancing personal life, downtime, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance hit home. As an entrepreneur and business owner, achieving goals and managing fame necessitates a careful equilibrium. Keeping certain aspects of personal life private, away from public scrutiny, becomes crucial, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a sense of self amid the hustle.
In essence, “Lucky Me” has been more than a book; it’s been a guide, resonating with my experiences, values, and aspirations as an entrepreneur in the ever-evolving landscape of business and creativity.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Sure, let’s rewind to the “Fun Fact:” – back when I decided to join the Air Force Reserve. It was a strategic move, allowing me to navigate both my budding acting career and military service simultaneously. Initially, it provided financial stability during slower periods in my acting gigs and the early days of starting PAYUS Productions.
Balancing both worlds had its advantages, giving me the flexibility to chase my passion while fulfilling my military obligations. However, as my entertainment career gained momentum, the juggling act became challenging. Military commitments, including the potential for deployments and missions, clashed with the emerging opportunities in the entertainment industry.
It reached a point where I had to make a crucial decision. On one side, there were the military obligations, the routine once-a-month duties as a reservist, and on the other, the beckoning breakthroughs in the entertainment world. It was a defining moment, and I leaned toward seizing the opportunities that felt like once-in-a-lifetime.
The Air Force Reserve had been a safety net, providing not only financial stability but also valuable experiences and an additional degree in Information Technology Administration and Management, along with veteran benefits. Despite the challenges, the situation resolved itself, and I eventually made the pivotal decision to break free from part-time military service and go full throttle into what truly makes me happy – building my business and flourishing in the creative realm. It was a significant pivot that brought me closer to my true path, aligning my actions with my deepest passions.
