We recently connected with Cavier Coleman and have shared our conversation below.
Cavier, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
In order to be a successful individual, I believe taking risks is an action that has to be taken more than just once in a while. Looking back, one of the biggest risks I took was when I decided to move to New York City when I was 21 years old with no money or support, I put my dreams in my suitcase and betted on myself. Not too long after, I was approached by a top ten model agency where I was signed and given the opportunity to move to South Africa to be represented. This experience then led me to an epiphany where I realized that I wanted to fulfill my purpose as an artist eventually leading me back to NYC. Without taking this risk, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be the artist who I am today.
Cavier, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan right outside of Detroit, I was given the name Cavier Coleman in the fall of 1988. My grandmother cultivated my childhood being the primary caretaker in my life until I moved to Atlanta, Georgia with my father when I was 11 years old. An experience that shaped a new path for my life was when I was casted to model in a Lil Wayne video in high school; this opened a new vision for me wanting to explore further into my creativity. Being an athlete was always a huge part of who I was – I was scouted to play basketball at Emmanuel College which eventually ended when I lost my scholarship due to an unfortunate event. However, I did not allow this loss to deter my determination; my inspiration led me to moving to New York City to set a new foundation. After quickly moving to NYC, I was approached by a top ten model agency which brought opportunity to be represented in South Africa where I lived for two years. During my time here, I had an epiphany, a striking realization that my main purpose was making art my life’s full purpose. I moved back to NYC where I dived deep into my artist perspective, painting out of my apartment. As I developed my style as an artist, I naturally found success and different people gravitating to my work. From there I was able to get my own studio gaining more space to explore and expand the breadth of my work. Being able to solidify my ground as an artist was one of the proudest moments of my life. Reflecting back, I know all my past life experiences were building blocks to where I am supposed to be, where I am right now. I have been able to showcase my art in galleries and customers’ homes worldwide and continue to produce work daily. Remember to never quit on your goals and dreams; walk every step of the way with purpose.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Being an athlete has shaped a huge part of who I am today, specifically basketball which I grew up playing throughout my young adult life. In high school, I was scouted where I received a full scholarship to play at Emmanuel College. An unfortunate event happened which led to multiple players on the team losing their scholarships, including myself. During this point in my life, I felt helpless; I wasn’t able to afford school and without basketball, I wasn’t sure who I was. Here I knew I had to make a pivot to focus on what my real purpose was. I took a huge risk and moved to New York City where I can honestly stay calibrated a series of events leading me to fulfill my career as a model and an artist. Looking back, I’m more than grateful and believe that everything happens for a reason and we must stay diligent to believe in ourselves.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
First and foremost, staying consistent has allowed me to build my reputation within the market. My work is not limited to one lane – through art, sport, fashion and photography, I’ve been able to reach different like minded individuals allowing me to expand my community and have an impact on the industry. The people I surround myself with and have influenced me to get to where I am are huge contributors to my reputation in the market as well. Staying true to myself and not letting anything or anyone get in the way of my career path has allowed me to be successful and continue to push my work through different outlets.
