We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kellee Morton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kellee, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have known for many years that I wanted to pursue comedy and performing arts, but my obligation to the US Navy was far greater. I am now able to perform as a hobby and I absolutely love it.
Kellee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Kells Morton, I got into comedy initially by enrolling in the Virginia Beach Funnybone comedy course. My instructor was the very talented Mr. Tim Loulies. I love to make people laugh, but he taught myself and many others how to do it well. This year has been super amazing, I feel so blessed because I have been able to do stand up. I think what sets me apart from others is my unique, laid back perspective on life which has landed me spots on a various number of comedy shows. I am most proud of the fact that I am able to live out my dreams at this very moment, serve my country and spend time family. I feel like laughter heals everything and it’s therapeutic to make people laugh.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am not extremely far from retirement from the Navy. I have served 23 years, so when I am able to hang the uniform up, I want to be a comedian full time.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Can’t say it’s the pay lol, being able to do something I love has helped me work on my craft. In some ways, i wish I could have started sooner. However, on the flip side, I am kind of glad that i did start later in life so that im not a struggling artist, just an artist.
