We were lucky to catch up with Carrie Berk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Carrie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I recently released my solo debut book, “My Real-Life Rom-Com.” It chronicles my experiences in dating as a teenager and the lessons I took away from them. I’m not telling people how to date or who to date; I’m simply sharing my experiences and people can take what they will from them. This is super meaningful because there are no books out there written by a teenager for teenagers about dating. I wanted to fill that void. Nobody knows teenager better than another teenager who can relate. I wanted teens to see they’re not alone. Additionally, I am very candid about my mental health journey in the book and how that ties into how I found self-love.

Carrie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My career started off when I was 8 years old when I published my first children’s book series with my mom, “Peace, Love and Cupcakes.” That turned into a 12-book series. Then, I published two more mother-daughter series, “Fashion Academy” and “Ask Emma.” I am also a social media influencer with nearly 4 million followers on TikTok and a freelance journalist for several publications. “My Real-Life Rom-Com” is my solo book debut.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I was first pitching “My Real-Life Rom-Com,” I couldn’t find an agent. It’s very much a feminist book, and all the agents I was speaking to were men who did not resonate with the story. I did not give up and found an agent that instantly got my vision, which I’m so grateful for.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to see the impact I have on people. I’ve gotten so many messages from people who read “My Real-Life Rom-Com” on how much of an impact the book had on them, particularly the candid last chapter about mental health. Those moments remind me why I do what I do. I want to inspire and empower as many people as I can.
