Frederick, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
Our first paid supporters came a year after not making any money in business and spending over $5,000. The way we did this was after a year of doing free shoots for people to build our portfolio, one of the people we did a free shot for referred their friend to us.

My name is Frederick Russell I’m Co-Owner and Videographer/Marketer of JFL Productions. We started as 3 broke college friends & roommates who knew that we had talents and wanted to create a company that showcased all our talents. JFL Productions officially started in July 2020 (during the pandemic), but we had been practicing our crafted since October 2019. We offer Photography-Videography-Marketing & Drone Services in Dallas, TX / Houston, TX / Jackson, MS / Harrisburg, PA / Philadelphia, PA / Baltimore, MD. We pride our self on bringing your vision to life through media production & marketing, while embracing your creativity.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson or lessons (lol) we had to unlearn was a couple. The first lesson was that we have to be together to communicate effectively. Once I left Harrisburg we had communication issues at first because it was our first time being apart in business and we never experienced that before. Us fixing this issue is part of the reason why we are able to have people on the team in different places because we experimented between ourselves first.
The second biggest issue was organization (I feel like we still have trouble with this lol) documentations, system and money tracking is a very big thing for business of all sizes. Especially if you are looking for business assistance, growing your business and making sure the busy can run its self.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What I think help build our reputation is following the JFL model (Just Free Livin), what that means is living through the beauty of art and setting a vibe for our supporters. In the Dallas & Houston Market in particular, we put our self in the right places and we also connect others together. I also think our reputation of working with other photographers/ videographers & marketers is very different because some people collab but we unite.
