We were lucky to catch up with Robert Rodriguez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
During my time in college I had the opportunity to work during the summer at a few internships. I was majoring in marketing and was headed in the future to work in some type of corporate setting. After two opportunities of working in an office setting I quickly realized this wasn’t for me. I’m not the type of person that can be seated for a very long time and being in front of monitor for most of the day wasn’t for me. At that moment I knew that I had to find something different. I knew I enjoyed working closely with others because I had worked in restaurants for many years. I also loved sports and exercise. After talking with some friends I decided to get certified and try my hand at being a personal trainer. It gave me the chance to help and connect with others while being on my feet and moving. 20 plus years and I’m still at it! Where I took a risk was going a different route. It would have been easy for me to get started with a big company and go the corporate route. My parents had paid for my college degree and they weren’t excited about my choice. I just knew I had to give it a try. At the end of the day it has all worked out!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce your company to our readers.
At BDx our goal to impact as many lives as possible through fitness. We specialize in small group training and one on one for people over 40. In a time where there’s so much information being available it’s hard to know what’s true. We have social media fitness gurus giving us advice everyday. At BDx we educate our clients daily and work on getting them to make life long changes. We don’t see our clients just reaching their specific goals that they came in with, but working towards living a better life in their later years. When it comes to our team and location we stand out. One of core values is learn and grow and we pride ourselves on educating our staff and helping them grow as individuals so they can be better to help our members. Also the community at BDx is unique. We are a private facility that has a welcoming community and ego’s are left at the door.
I’ve been all over the world and have seen many gyms. I am very proud of our company and can say without doubt that we provide something special.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There was no better time for BDx to show our resilience other than during the pandemic. As we know the gym industry was destroyed during this time. We were forced to shut down our doors for 2 months. At this point in our business we had never done online training and operated strictly in person. As soon as we closed down we came together as a team and got many of our clients to try online training. We delivered equipment to members who didn’t have any. We created an Facebook members page where we provided our members free classes for exercising and cooking. We wrote daily emails and focused on helping members where we could. There’s so much to share here but I can say every member of our staff stepped up and did so much to get us through. Since that time we have almost doubled in staff and growth and I believe it’s because of the strong team members we have.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
When you’re working in a business it’s very hard to see everything. The biggest thing recently that has helped us grow is investing in mastermind group of gym owners. When you surround yourself with other people that are experiencing the same things as you are, you learn a lot. Because many of the gym owners are in different stages of their businesses you can learn from their past and can probably get the answers you need to the problems you are facing. I believe investing in yourself will allow your business to grow faster.
