We recently connected with Janine Molinari and have shared our conversation below.
Janine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
“Fake it till you make it” is my creative life motto.. In other words, nothing ventured nothing gained. As a multi-faceted creative artist and perpetual risk taker, I found a way to couple my art with becoming a business woman; as the owner and artistic director of two performing arts companies, Dance Molinari NYC/LA , and the newly formed, Internationally based Breaking Borders, while juggling a career as a freelance director and choreographer.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Today I am celebrating my 24th anniversary of my Broadway Performing Arts Company Dance Molinari (DMO) based in the heart of the times square theater district in New York City. A company that has since trained the likes of Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, Taylor Schilling, Matt Gumley, Nicholas Barasch, Andrea Bowen, Meg Donnelly, Peyton List, Matt Gumley, Bella Knock, Audrey Bennett, Noah Galvin, Jonathan Demar, Josh Turchin, Alyssa Marvin,Analise Scarpaci, Muo Duo, Max Bartos and countless other artists working in this industry in their way to future stardom. DMO excels in audition preparation and training in song, dance and acting for tv, film, tours, commercials, music videos, and of course,,Broadway theatre
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As a young artist, I thought my success would be shortly forthcoming. As I matured I had to come to the understanding that true success is a process that comes in its own time rather than what I imagined. It is a process of trial and error, observing, listening and most of all practical application, in other words, practice, practice practice! The backstory is that certain successes came at a very young age leading me to think that success would be easy, a cake walk if you will,
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have a survivor’s instinct, yet there have been times when I have questioned my placement in this difficult and abstract business. I was hired by a reputable regional theater that I had worked several times in years past, however, upon arrival, I encountered a director and potential future artistic director who was threatened by my work and past reputation at that theatre, set out to bully and sabotage my artistry, by convincing the producer that I was not rate for this production. To my surprise and humiliation, my long time friend and producer had no choice but to let me go. My first thought was to quit the industry and to give up my dream. After sulking for the next several weeks, I went into a deep introspection, even taking up drumming to pound out my anger and emerged stronger and more resolved to succeed than ever before! I joined the director and choreographer’s union. and within two weeks was offered to choreograph a major New York production!
