We were lucky to catch up with Rahkii recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rahkii, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Embarking on this musical journey as a black female artist and mom has been a profound risk, but one that I embrace. Being a mom is my greatest joy, and it’s a huge part of my identity that I’ll never compromise. Stepping into the world of music, an industry known for its challenges, means facing potential scrutiny and breaking through preconceived notions. Juggling late-night studio sessions with early mornings tending to my family, I’ve learned to navigate the balance between pursuing my passion and fulfilling my role as a mom. It’s a risk that has brought both challenges and rewards, proving that, as a black woman and a mom, my narrative is multi-faceted and deserving of its place in the industy. The music I create is not just an artistic expression but a reflection of the risks, triumphs, and unyielding love that define my journey as a black female artist and a mother.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Rahkii, a singer-songwriter from the soulful streets of Chicago, Illinois. My musical journey began at an early age within the church, where the sound of gospel melodies ignited the spark of my passion. Later I was drawn to the world of performing arts at Columbia College Chicago which became a transformative chapter that deepened my connection and understanding of music.
In the realm of creativity, I fell in love with songwriting, creating a channel where I could turn life stories into lyrics for various artists. However, the call to tell my own stories couldn’t be silenced. Taking the reins, I birthed my own musical project entitled “Capes” , a canvas where my life stories and creative perspective could take flight. One of those songs from the project also found its way to becoming the theme song for a national television series, a dream-come-true moment that still feels surreal.
My music is a blend of my faith in Jesus and the everyday, a reflection of my journey from my heart and beliefs to the streets of Chicago.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Each song, every lyric, and every note crafted is a tiny part of a larger narrative that resonates with the human experience. It’s the understanding that someone, somewhere, might find solace, joy, or inspiration in the melodies and stories I create.
There’s an innate power in art to transcend individual experiences, forming a bridge between hearts and minds. It’s a humbling thought to consider that a piece of my creation could be a companion for someone navigating the labyrinth of emotions, offering comfort in times of solitude, or becoming a soundtrack to their moments of triumph and introspection. In these instances, creativity becomes a profound means of connection, a reminder that we are not alone in our journeys, and that shared stories can foster understanding and unity. The ability to touch lives, evoke emotions, and make someone feel seen and heard is, without a doubt, the most fulfilling reward of being a creative.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My faith sets my creativity free. It unlocks doors to endless possibilities, inspiring me to explore my imagination and connect deeply with others. Using creativity as a tool, I aim to share universal truths that go beyond personal experiences, inviting everyone to join a journey of reflection, connection, and spiritual discovery.
