We were lucky to catch up with Tiffany (Bendelow) Berry recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Last summer, I decided to quit my steady job as an epidemiologist of 12 years, to pursue my passion and love for music, and its incredible uses to serve others.
It has been and continues to be one of the scariest, and most rewarding, empowering journeys I have ever been on. With the support and encouragement of my incredible husband and my “chosen family” of friends, I am on this path of creativity to serve others through sound, music and frequency.
It was a huge risk to uproot from my steady, predictable career, and I am leaning into a lot of discomfort. Nonetheless, I have a deep knowing; gnosis, and I cannot see myself doing anything else. I know it has been a risk worth taking, because I wake up everyday with a certainty in my cells. This is how I want to serve the community, and I feel empowered every time I sit at the computer to produce or step up to the decks to play.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The Duchess was not always known as such. Much of my life was spent in the realm of science and academia, and a more “conventional” career and life path. All the while, there was a creative, artistic thread and an obsession with music and sound. I began to pull on that thread more and more, and found myself challenging the common understanding that humans cannot be good at using both right & left hemispheres of the brain. This was a profound turning point in my life and career, when I discovered that just like a muscle, parts of the brain can become weak and atrophied without regular use and practice. When exercised, the brain can be made stronger and re-awakened. The old understanding of myself as purely scientific-minded completely shifted.
Several of my friends bore witness to this realization, and pooled together enough money to get my first DJ and sound setup, and I dove right in. I spent the last five years playing music, learning electronic music production, researching the history and use of sound, and partnering with people in the industry, to create bespoke experiences using music, sound, and sound frequencies.
I have since, founded Resonant Medicine LLC, as a pathway to help and serve others. Resonant Medicine LLC is based on the premise that frequency and music have incredibly healing and regenerative properties which can be applied across physical, mental, social and political landscapes.
I have done extensive research to better understand what makes music and sound so powerful. One strikingly important finding is the concept of “Solfeggio Frequencies”. Research consistently shows certain frequencies (of which there are 9), significantly affect systems at the genetic and cellular levels in every function in our bodies and brains. When paired PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic frequency) sound pads that capture these frequencies, a person can experience the power of sound through their ears and bodies.
My goal with Resonant Medicine, is to create a highly-curated, immersive sound experience through creative expression using ancient knowledge and current research. My goal as The Duchess, is to be a conductor of the infinite possibilities of sound. We have the power to catalyze positive change in our brains, in our bodies, and most importantly, our lives–using sound frequency and music.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
There are so many lessons that unfold when one endeavors to begin a new journey, in unfamiliar territory. I will highlight a couple of lessons that continue to be salient on this path, and which have required a processes of unlearning.
The biggest most important lesson is; if you are willing to be vulnerable, talk to others and ask for help, I guarantee there are many people who want to support, encourage and help you along the way. As humans and in this society, it has historically been considered a weakness to be vulnerable, share what you’re struggling with, and to ask for help. Thankfully, I think this paradigm is gradually shifting.
I imagine most of us have had the experience of being asked for help or support, and it brings on a deep feeling of honor and joy for the opportunity to give of ourselves. It is not only an indication of a person’s respect for who we are, but demonstrates a person’s feeling of safety with us, to be able to ask for something as vulnerable as help.
My ability to be vulnerable enough to ask others for help and support has given me a community of people who have helped me tremendously, directly impacting my ability to grow and evolve within my music career and ultimately, my life.
The second lesson has been a longer, more diligent process that I touched on earlier. I have had to unlearn the notion that humans are either: “right-brained, or left-brained”. It is a rather binary perspective, given the complexity of the human brain and our infinite abilities. I have gone through a process of new understanding, beginning with the belief that I was predominantly left-brained (logic and language focused). Coming from an academic and scientific background, it was a very difficult thing to consider that I am also creative. Through practice, and inquiry, (not to mention a myriad of studies that refute the binary/hard-set notion of right OR left brain), I have come to understand that just like our muscles, both sides of the brain are equally present, and grow stronger with practice, nurturing and patience.
It has been quite profound, once I fully stepped into this new understanding of my brain and its infinite capacities. My creativity has blossomed, the more I explore the right side of my brain and practice daily “exercise” to keep it strong and growing. Ultimately, we all have the capability to use our entire brain, if you exercise all of the structures within it.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal has always been clear and remains steady. I hope to be in service to others using the gifts and passion that drives me each day. I believe in the primal, well-founded fact that music and sound have profound regenerative and healing capabilities. I aim to use sound, music and frequency, one of the most accessible pathways, to facilitate calibration, regeneration, better health and happier, more fulfilling lives.
