We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christina Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Christina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me is believed in me.
I’m blessed with a family that has always believed in me wholeheartedly.
My parents have never made me doubt whether or not I could make it as a full time artist and never tried to talk me out of it. And because of that, I never questioned it either. For as long as I can remember my family has always showered me with art supplies and encouraged me to keep going. They were front and center at every art show and the first in line to celebrate my original pieces. That kind of support says it all. And in my adult life, it gave me the foundation to start my career and I’ve never looked back.
From my family to my teachers in high school and all the friends I’ve made along the way.. their belief in me has kept my dream alive and my fire lit.
Believing in someone makes them believe in themselves.
Try not to underestimate what your support or kind words can do for someone or their future, the impact can be really special and something so significant.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Christina Johnson, and I am a self-taught artist, born in New Hampshire. I was raised in an area influenced by nature and all its beauty. From a young age I was inspired by the outdoors and my passion for being outside with nature showed me that everything in life is art.
I found my calling in wanting to pass on that connection to others and I built my life around it.
I have spent years traveling and exploring. Coast to coast, national park to national park and everywhere in between. Every environment has something special to offer and I love sharing the energy of what I experience through my artwork. I paint the places I go and draw the animals I see, favoring oil paint and charcoal for its raw, bold and earthy qualities. Nature and spirituality are such strong influences in my work and life.
I believe in being able to translate the beauty of everything into powerful pieces of art, to allow others to live vicariously through them and see life from a new perspective. I feel that by never losing your sense of wonder we can impact the future in how we aspire it to be.
My work has been displayed in shows, galleries and private homes across the country.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The most powerful story in my journey that has built immense resilience would have to be the passing of my fiance.
A year and a half ago my fiance passed away due to cancer complications.. if I know anything about resilience it’s because of him. He has inspired and empowered me to carry on, as he did for so long, with bravery, strength and resilience. He lived a way of life that was contagious. To do good and be the good. To always treat people the way you want to be treated and leave everything better than you found it.
Witnessing the trail of value he left in his wake has brought a new sense of purpose to my life. He truly left this world better than he found it and his resilience to live a meaningful life is what I carry with me every day.
My dream of being an artist started with nature but has recently evolved. Nature always inspired me but I never asked WHY it inspired me. When my fiancé passed I connected with nature in a new way. I experienced it’s power, it’s grace, and it’s ability to heal. Nature is therapeutic and I want to help people experience the same through my art. I want to remind them that they are not alone, they are powerful and they can find peace within themselves to celebrate each day for the gift that it is.
We will all experience adversity. It’s inevitable in life. We will be faced with challenges. But how we choose to see them will be the meaning we create from them. They’ll teach us that we are stronger than we ever thought. More powerful than we ever thought. More resilient than we ever thought. It’s all here to help us grow.
Im thankful he taught me not to limit my challenges but to challenge my limits. And that our ability to respond and ‘bounce back’ is what sets us apart. I’m here to help others find the good in the bad, by sharing my experiences and my art.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes! What’s driving me to create is much more than a beautiful landscape or a powerful animal. It’s to help people heal. To remind everyone that you are strong, powerful and full of magic. I do it through nature inspired artwork and to remind you how badass you are, what will you create?
