We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsay Sizemore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents are great. From a young age, my dad especially, instilled into me a great work ethic. When I was a child, my work was school and it was very important to my parents that my grades were A’s and B’s. I started my first job the day I turned 16 at our local McDonalds. I learned the value of money and working hard to achieve what I want in life. No matter what my insane dreams were, my parents believed in me and even at 27, they continue to push me while also being my biggest cheerleaders.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been doing hair and makeup styling since high school for friends and family and it has grown to something I didn’t imagine was possible for a small town girl. I remember when I got my first wedding gig, I was only charging $25 per face but I was so beyond excited that doing makeup could be my future. I’ve definitely paid my dues as a makeup artist and I’m so glad it has paid off for me. I have now worked events such as New York Fashion Week, Mrs. America, Mrs. Earth USA and getting to work with influential brands like Fruit of the Loom & Russell Athletic. Getting to travel the country doing makeup for weddings and other events has been truly a dream come true, but one of the coolest dreams that has come into fruition for me is owning a salon. I now have 12 other powerful women working alongside me. It has been such a blessing watching them succeed and also learning from them as well. They are all so incredible and it’s insane that this is my life now. I love them all so much and am just so thankful that they also believe in my vision.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Whenever I was in cosmetology school, I was in a terrible car accident. I broke over 20 bones, was bed ridden for a month and was in physical therapy for an over a year recovering. As soon as I got released from the hospital, I went right back to cosmetology school. I know for a lot of people, they would have just given up and took the rest of the year off of school but I was determined. So my sweet precious dad, took me an hour to cosmetology school every day and wheeled me up to classes. I graduated in May that year and walked across the stage in crutches, my neck brace and arm brace and proudly got my certificate. A week later I had my major neck surgery where I was in the hospital for another week. I had a lot of battles in physical therapy. My left index finger would not move and I needed that finger to cut hair. Lots of pain and surgeries and therapy later, I could finally move it. I immediately went and took my state board and the rest is history. I couldn’t be more proud of my resilience to keep fighting and pushing for my goals.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I love all my team so much. For me, when I was thinking about L Cosmetics and the girls I wanted to work with every day, it was very important to me that not only were they kind and friendly but that they also are passionate about our industry. I wanted women who have a strong work ethic and that were girls girls that would push each other to be the best we can be. I tell my girls all the time that we all give “golden retriever energy” and I love that. I couldn’t bear the thought of working with mean girls who talk behind your back. I love that we all lift each other up. So I guess working with your friends is the best way to maintain a great work environment. 10/10 recommend.
