We were lucky to catch up with Emett Joseph recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emett, thanks for joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Yes, I absolutely do! Vacations help me stay in touch with who I am outside of what I do and offer to the world. It allows me to experience new things, meet new people, and see the world in a refreshing perspective. Vacations help me look at work in a fresh perspective, too!
If you want to serve your clients better, you have to serve yourself better. An empty cup can’t fill another!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Emett, I’m a wedding photographer and have been for 5 years! At this time, I’m 29 years old and living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I help couples have a laid back wedding day and still get the dreamy photos they’re looking for. I work all across Washington & Oregon, whether it’s the rainy streets of Seattle, the mountains or the Oregon coast. It’s a lot of fun and I really love what I do.
I’m most proud of being published by Washington Wedding Day aka Seattle Bride, and for the several times I’ve been featured by larger brands like June Bug Weddings and Wandering Weddings. Getting to travel all across the west coast and some of the southwest has been a ton of fun, and I’ve gotten to see so much beauty through what I do for a living!
Getting to see my clients celebrate their marriage with their family and friends in unique, progressive, and innovating ways is always fulfilling. Weddings are major events in which familial history is changed and lineages are created. Getting to see people celebrate such a huge milestone, and documenting it for them, is a heartwarming privilege.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Getting in touch and connected with people ahead of me in the industry. There was a lot of mentors along the way that helped me learn and grow and get to where I’m at. Because they were so much further along in their career, it allowed me to learn a lot in a very brief period of time.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I started with very cheap overhead – just a $200 camera and a lot of time spent learning! As I booked more sessions and grew my clientele, I reinvested the money to get to where I’m at now!
