We were lucky to catch up with Tiffany Pound recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tiffany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
I can ponder a time when life challenges made me feel that I had failed both in life and as an individual. I graduated and completed my Cosmetology and Shampoo tech certifications at Ogeechee Technical College. After Training all of these late nights and long days completing task sheets, crying, and wanting to give up because life was happening all at the same time, I went to take my state boards to get my License. I passed the practical with flying colors and failed my written exam by one point. The feeling of defeat came over me. I went home, studied more, and scheduled my retest. Out of confidence and persistence, I had to stay determined. Everything I stood for and who I was becoming depended on this moment. With fifteen dollars in my gas tank, no extra money to refill, prayer, and much faith, I had finally passed my written exam! Never give up on your dreams! Failure is a part of success.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Tiffany Pound, and I am the mother of 3 beautiful children Arie (15) Elijah (13) Gabby (6). I am married to the most wonderful person in the world my Pusher, Partner, and the Love of my life Antonio Pound. Without you in my life, nothing would seem to make sense. Journaling and praying daily is my place of peace and it gives me the ability to reflect on how far I have come and where God is taking me to. I am nothing without him.
Since I was a little girl, I have loved playing with my dolls’ hair, whichever I could get my hands on. I come from a family that is crafty in the Hair service business. My mother would take me to the hair salon with her when I was smaller, and the smell of the pump-it-up hair spritz, oil sheen, and Marcel iron sets fuming in the air was pure beautification. I had an aunt who would fix my hair. She did hair in her home for years. At that moment in time, this was the culture. The excitement of the ladies in both hair salons putting the finishing touches on their clients and spinning that chair around for them to see the final look was everything. The twinkle in their eyes, the smiles that lit up the skies, and the confidence they left with, I knew that I wanted to be a part of this movement.
I prefer to service individuals with maintaining their natural crown and promoting hair growth in all walks of life. I love to do Steam Treatments, Deep Conditioning Treatments, Crotchets, Protective Styling, and so much more. What sets me apart from others is that I am Me! I am uniquely Defined. The craft, skill, and gift are all in my DNA. I believe in Serving others, encouraging and uplifting these individuals who sit in the chair because they need someone to talk to. For me, Hair service is not just a job or a career, but this is Ministry!
I am most proud of the Growth I have experienced in the process. My definition of Growth is maturing in ways you never knew existed and expanding your knowledge, wisdom, and understanding beyond the capacity of your own set of Limitations. I would like you to be patient with yourself and allow yourself the same grace that you extend to others. Be confident in yourself and show up for you every time. Lastly, Believe and have faith in what you are trying to accomplish. This is what the “Growth Experience Enterprises LLC” is all about.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The Lesson I had to unlearn would be the Lesson of an old mindset. Experiences, Circumstances, Traditions, and Poverty mindsets can alter our ability to shift. Some things have been used and transferred from generation to generation and may not apply to the generation that I am in now. I grew up in an era where I saw my family struggle to make ends meet, and the sacrifices that they made for their family were just enough. The overflow was not evident. I knew my mindset had to change if I wanted the abundance to start. The lessons taught me how to survive, not to thrive, and to exist and not live. I had to become the very blueprint that I wanted to see. This process allowed me to retrain my thinking, my language, and how I perceived myself. I wanted something my children would take the Vision that I started and run with the baton. Generational Wealth, overflow, and wisdom is what I desired for the Future that God had for me.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Cosmetology school is where I was the most resilient. I was a mother of two still pursuing a passion. My son had speech impairments, chronic asthma, and vision problems in his youth. I missed classes traveling to Emory in Atlanta, MCG in Augusta, and Savannah for speech therapy. I would not let that stop me. I continued to push a plan with my instructor. The plan consisted of me coming in early, staying late to make up extra hours, and working straight through lunch with bathroom breaks. There was a time when I had to sit out a semester and be on academic probation. The fight in me kept me in school and in Good Standing while allowing me to graduate on time.
