Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chef Dj. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chef Dj, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
How I got my very first client was very interesting to me, was my family, my friends, and the person I was dating at that point and time they all would brag about my cooking. I started working doing home healthcare while I was doing home healthcare. The lady would always smell food on me at the main office so one day she said, do you cook? I said yes! Then I said I’ve been cooking for a while. She said your food smells so good on you and I laughed with that being said she ordered a plate and I sold her the plate. This was in 2010 after she had the plate. She turned around two days later and called me and booked me for my first Catering real job, I cater for some seniors over off Illinois in Dallas Texas. It was about 80 of them. I won’t ever forget the menu. It was baked chicken greens with smoked turkey, potato salad, deviled eggs, macaroni, and cheese and rolls for dessert was a banana pudding! I was so excited from after getting the reviews from the seniors, I knew I had made it from that day forward I never looked back. I kept applying pressure and pressing to be great , as life has went by I have learned so much in the Cooking business. I have created a skill that have open many doors for me that have put food on my table of clothes on my back. I am very grateful to be the man that I am I work hard , I take my work very serious. So I am just grateful for that one opportunity that open the door for me to travel to world to do what I do!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Well, yes, it was a side hustle cooking for me. I was a caregiver for many years I heard for adults and special these children. It was a passion. It was something in my heart love to do I made a decent money I save my money, and I invested into Cooking about my catering equipment little by little Months by months the next thing I know I had so much I did not know what to do with it. Lol. So I would sell plates and I did that for about three years and I stopped selling plates and I turned into a full-time chef going to people house cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner, catering parties, events, Wedding, kids, events, church events, any event you have I would do it I put so much work into myself. I use the money that I made for my job and invested into my business. I made sure that I stay focused because yes it was a hustle, but I knew that it could be a life story and a journey it had brought me so much joy to watch and see people I don’t just own a business, I’m able to give back to the community where I came from. I’m able to feed the homeless I’m able to look out for folks. My journey was a hustle, but look where it had became into a full pledge business that I am proud of Dj Catering Company something that I am very proud of. I put in the work so I would tell anybody have your vision. Keep your job work get what you need to make your vision. Be great get what you need to make. You be great your peace meditate pray Stay focused do not give up be determined even in a mist of the storm trust that God will provide. I have been in places where our business have been up and down specially, with COVID-19, but God still provided your name is all you have let your name be great and people will call you from state the state to be a blessing to your business!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
What have been the best source of new clients for me have been social media I’ll tell anyone if you have a business there’s no reason why your business should not be thriving. You have Facebook you have Instagram you have Twitter you have so many platforms that you can put your business on and create a brand out of this world! Where people can see what you are doing, I have got so many customers from social media social media have been a blessing to me . I will tell you to build a business page to get the word out and I promise people will be able to see your work! We hurt our self when we should step out on faith and put ourselves out there. Do not have fear. Trust in you. If you don’t trust in you, how can Customer trusting you and value you remember, you have everything that it takes to be great you have everything that it takes to be a great brand in life your business is your baby you have to birth it and you have to raise it to what you want it to be!
