We were lucky to catch up with Alexandra Kube recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexandra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
There was a time when I had the misconception that “learning” art would stifle my creativity. Once I accepted that learning meant adding tools to my craft, I embraced the process and appreciated what other accomplished artists had to offer. I started with a community college (earned an associates degree), moved on to specific classes (animation related) and I now take online classes every so often when something strikes me. Every painting or sketch that I embark on is definitely a learning experience. I’d say that I’m still evolving as an artist. My subject matter, style and medium is constantly changing.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been an artist. There was a time in my life when I asked myself how and what I could do to make a living as an artist. I focused on the animation industry as my goal. I eventually made it in as a prop designer for major animation studios. The absolute best time in my life! Working with other talented and dedicated artists was dream come true for me. The industry is fickle and I eventually fell out of the loop and retired from the beloved industry. I continue to create my own artwork and am perpetually exploring with painting and sketching various subjects and mediums. My favorite is landscapes as well as cubist compositions of musical instruments. I’ve been called upon to paint portraits of people and pets which I’m always honored to do but prefer to take the reins off and zone out into my own creations.
I’ll probably never get into a formal gallery since my work can’t be pigeon holed into a specific style. I enjoy bringing my artwork into the hands of my patrons directly anyway.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I find joy in coaching other wanna be artists. Seeing them light up when they get that ah ha moment thrills me. Of course the best feeling is when someone want to hang one of my pieces in their home AND pay me for it! The best feeling for me is when I have some good music playing and an in progress canvas in front of me that I’m happy with. Nothing can compare to that inexplainable and timeless feeling.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Please don’t support AI! Please buy original art from artists. Respect the artists and give credit where credit is due. In this age of social media and the internet; if you are using or sharing an artist’s image, please give the artist credit.
