Melissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
I love that I have created a business that I might one day pass to one of my kids. Owning my own business has been great that is gives me more freedom with my family. We are able to take vacations yearly to our favorite lake and spend weeks there at a time because I can work from anywhere. I have clients there that I work with every year. It is a way for me to provide the extras for my kids and for that I am completely grateful. One day I would love to be able to teach my kids how to use a camera, edit, and create with me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So I graduated college with a bachelors degree majoring in psychology with a concentration in behavior analysis. I went on to work with children with autism in a private school for 3.5 years. I always knew I wanted to be able to stay home with my kids, so when we started a family I quit my job. When my son was 9months old I started my photography business and taught myself everything I could through online courses and a lot of research. The rest is history. We are 13 years into this. We have had a lot of changes through the years. I had to rebuild my client base when we moved and as the kids went through different stages of life, my business changed with them. When they were little I took on a lot of younger clients, I was a second shooter for weddings, and did mostly newborn and young family photography. As they grew I wanted to be home more on the weekends so I started working more with preschools and working more during the day while they were in school and not so much over the weekends. I love this about my business model and brand….it can change to fit our lives not the other way around
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Word of mouth has been a HUGE factor in my business. Giving people amazing family memories and having them refer me to their friends is how I built this.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started this business and it was starting to really grow and then we moved. It was when I had to really start putting my name out there to new friends and social media to rebuild my client base.
