We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hamilton & Rose Massey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hamilton & Rose below.
Alright, Hamilton & Rose thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Our most meaningful project, as of late, was our Reformation Series of Shorts on YouTube this past October. The Reformation movement, in many ways, is the foundation of America. Those escaping the control of the Papacy, found religious freedom in America. The Reformation movement gave millions of Christians the ability to worship according to the dictates of their conscience and not the force of a centralized ecclesiastical power. Since October 31, is actually Reformation Day, we decided that a month long spot light on the Reformers was important.
The idea just came to us while we were reading the first few chapters of The Great Controversy. This book, first written in 1884, concisely documents the history of the Christian church and accurately foretells Earth’s prophetic destination. We have thumbed through and distributed this book over the past 8 years. This year, in 2023, we were led to focus on the Reformation chapters and that’s where we started to get inspiration.
We began to see that there were multiple connections to pop culture and the counter-reformation. Persecution has been shifted from the guillotine to the phone screen. Pop-culture is able to re-write history, because the power of their influence overrides facts, as consumers fall in love with the feeling it provides. Bands like Queen, hip-hop producers Pharrell and Wyclef, and even children’s books, have subject matter that deflects from the seriousness of the Reformation movement.
We feel this is an important project for people living in 2023 because we believe that not only does history repeat but we believe this history will be repeated very soon and as the prophetic clock moves forward, our liberties especially as Americans, religious or not, will be affected by the push for church and state to come together under the papacy’s banner in a more contemporary setting and there will be a need of a modern reformation.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
two witnesses Ministry (lowercase on purpose) came about when Rose and I started dating in 2014. I was a post-grad looking for God and Rose was a God-fearing woman, maintaining the faith and defying the statistics of most women in their early twenties. While dating, we did bible studies together, listened to testimonies, read the Great Controversy, and, of course, found time to try out vegan-friendly Mexican food places in the Central Florida Area. In September of 2015, Rose urged that we should go to Philadelphia to do evangelism when the pope came to congress and America. It was a life-changing experience. We were passing out the Great Controversy book, giving people something to help them grasp eternity. It was great! Upon returning, the desire to do ministry was growing. Rose and I fasted and prayed and then in 2016, we left our conventional jobs to pursue ministry full-time. Rose’s dad was battling cancer at the time, and it was a miracle that he was able to walk her down the isle at our wedding. We got the call to head to New York, two days after our wedding. We visited multiple cities and people; growing together and gathering information. We were then called to California. We did door-to-door work, talking with people and gaining experience. Then we went to an evangelistic series where they were using video of news stories and relating it to the Bible. The concept stuck! We returned to Florida in 2017 and by the end of the year, we had launched our channel. We thought about what kind of content we would make, but once again prayer and fasting made it clear what kind of videos we should produce. Rose, drawing up sort of a mission statement, explained that we would take the Great Controversy, and use multimedia to draw vivid connections to history and prophecy. The name “two witnesses” comes from Revelation 11, where the Two Witnesses are mentioned and revealed to be the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. This was perfect, because as Seventh-Day Adventists and protestants, it is important for anything we write or produce to be supported by the Word of God. Rose’s poetry gives a creative, fresh, and timeless appeal to our channel (one having been banned by YouTube) and our “Prophecy and Pop-Culture” (P&P) series examines some of popular culture’s most beloved classics under a Scriptural and prophetic lens. We were interviewed by Forbidden Knowledge News this past summer for our P&P docu-sermon on Tupac Shakur. As we continue to grow closer to God, we simply share what He is showing to us through film and videos.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Well, we did face homelessness during the 2020 Covid pandemic. It was a time of struggle and change. We had just gotten our 2004 Honda Pilot and it became a place to sleep on a few occasions. God is good, and as we continued to distribute literature, we edited videos while in the seclusion of the Vermont wilderness where we “camped”. It was a cleansing time as well. No Wifi, barely a cell signal, and eating vegetables that were roasted over an open fire. Our video “Exit the Mother” was released on July 20th of that year. We continued to travel, distribute, and edit. We were getting only about 3 videos per year at that time. We kept praying and God kept sending inspiration. As artsy people, Rose and I know the frustration of not being able to create. With God, the river of creativity is always flowing. After God provided us with housing in 2022, we’ve been working harder making a lot more short videos and now we’re seeking to transition into Podcasts, livestreaming and music making. We were definitely able to come back stronger!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Exodus 35:35 says that God gives “…wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.” The vision and concepts that God has given are phenomenal. Then to see the concept that started in the mind, materialize, is second to none. Many times we have to sit back and review what we consider “our own work”, but in actuality we are brushes, inkwells, and keystrokes in the hand of Jesus. The process is rewarding but the most rewarding part would be seeing lives touched and enlightened by the creative work we do. Although, it is not only something wonderfully rewarding here on earth but we believe will be even more rewarding when we are in heaven together and people tell us how what they viewed from us blessed them and helped set them on the path to Heaven.
